COMMON SENSES
Establishing greater connections with the water story of the bays through sensory connection
Anna McFarlane
I would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the various lands on which you all work today and to any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people participating in this meeting. Particularly the Gadigal and Wangal people, the traditional owners of our site.
I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging and celebrate the diversity of Aboriginal peoples and their ongoing cultures and connections to the lands and waters of NSW.

Target: Take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt the loss of biodiversity and, by 2020, protect and prevent the extinction of threatened species
Target: By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution

Target: By 2020, integrate ecosystem and biodiversity values into national and local planning, development processes, poverty reduction strategies and accounts

SENSORY INTRODUCTION

“The formal properties of water remain constant in every context: it will FREEZE, THAW and EVAPORATE at the same temperature, precipitate under similar conditions, describe predictable patterns of flow in response to topographic forms,

and retains CONSISTENT VISUAL and AUDIAL CHARACTERISTICS in
its various forms”
Existing industry: Rejuvenate the local economy. This is a significant challenge to any construction. The current industry doesn’t provide necessary amenities for the site users. (+) (-)

Underground water network: existing network must be considered and designed around. Water already present on site creates opportunities to engage with water story (+) (-)
Silhouette of WBPS can be seen from almost everywhere on site (+)
Proposed metro station: Increases noise, decreases site lines to water, pollution increase connects the site to its greater context, brings users in and creates opportunity for connection on arrival (+) (-)
Proximity to water edge: Highly contaminated water, limited habitat potential. Provides aquatic habitat, water views, proximity increases connection (+) (-)
WBPS: cultural centre of the bays, can connect the water story to the site history (+)
FUNDAMENTAL ASSETS
Contamination: High levels of contamination in soil of surrounding area (+) (-)
A part of 12 metre deep harbour (+)
