Endless and repeating seasons of nature and generations

How can seasons engage with public domain benefit different generations from young to old at the Bay’s community?

CONTEXT_story of the Bays

Heavy industry claimed the perimeter of the harbour in White Bay, Johnstons Bay, Blackwattle Bay and Darling Harbour. This was also known as the “industrial belt” . A strong pride in industrial advancement with heroic buildings and infrastructure was achieved at the expense of the health and ecology of the natural landscape .

Always work overtime and high pressure, the poor work conditions always make me feel uncomfortable and get injury.

Yeah, I wish we can see the non-industrial side of the bay.

WHY?

“It’s only the essence of a thing that counts. When time strips everything else away, it’s only the hardness of the bone that’s left.”

------ Diana Gabaldon

Intergeneration changes & Health

WHY?

Intergenerational communities promote interaction and cooperation between individuals of different ages and focus on the needs of all residents. There are differs between generation, they may have different lifestyle and values. Therefore, the project will be led by different generations’ needs and behaviours and work as a lifelong project.

Seasonal changes & Memories

WHY?

Seasonality seems too obvious and we take seasons for granted in our daily life, but “taken-for-granted landscapes and elements of our daily lives are full of meaning”. It influences our behaviours and memories in different hidden ways and we underestimate the impact of seasonality on our perception, so we need to realize the importance of seasons.

what we thought about seasonality influence.. in reality about seasonality influence..

------ DaShanne Stokes

The site needs a new story, and new life!

The Bays Precinct has a rich indigenous, multicultural, and industrial history of transformative functions for Sydney and Australia. White Bay is located on south of Balmain and has been a cradle of industry. From 1854, the bay was dominated by Steam Saw Mills, the Australian Gas Light Company and the White Bay Power Station. Bald Rock is a natural feature of the bay, was the site of the local ferry wharf until the 1960s, so named because of the lack of vegetation in the area prior to landfill.

The White Bay Power Station has been unoccupied since 1983 but has great history value and can recall memory. Also, to develop marine industry, they blasting to cut the rocky hillside down, almost to water level, removed the Bald Rock and many other natural features.

How frail our human beings are when confronted with nature. Many generations have come and pass, while nature remains the same. So it can be seen as a circulation and repeat of generations and nature . The White Bay will become a safe space for different generations that can pull to engage with nature, to discover changes of seasons,

From Generations From Seasons From Memory

Consider the difference of behaviour and needs between younger generation and older generation

Rearrange native plants into seasonal landscapes

Embrace and integrate history into daily access

Provide well-connected but different types of pathways and recreation ares for different generations to communicate and interact.

Promote children and elder’s connection between nature through seasonal plantings to reflect and realize difference between seasons.

Create different functional spaces for people to engage with multi activities to reflect history also to create new experience and memories.

To develop the site by testing antonym, such as OPEN and ENCLOSE, FAST and SLOW, NEW and Old..... To create an inclusive and comprehensive space for all ages.....
