September… Ah, September! A month that always confuses me. On the one hand, there’s the bittersweet melancholy of returning from holidays, that tender sadness summer leaves behind. On the other, there’s the freshness carried by new beginnings. It feels like we’re standing with one foot in two different seasons – and maybe that’s why September has its own touch of magic.
Rest – no matter how much we managed to get – gives us strength. Strength to keep going, to try again, to set new goals… or to leave them for later. Because honestly, it’s not mandatory every September to rewrite our list of “musts” from scratch. Sometimes it’s enough to simply stay present, to savor the small changes around us, and to give inspiration the space to arrive on its own.
The new season is not just a beginning; it’s a continuation we can build at our own pace. And that thought alone brings optimism: that we don’t need to do everything right now, but can move forward step by step, with a smile, with faith, with romance. With appetite for life!
So let’s keep the warmth of summer in our hearts and enter this new season with open arms. Whatever September, autumn – this in-between “after-summer” time – may bring, let’s just remember that every ending is also a beginning… And that every beginning, no matter how small it may seem, can carry something truly wonderful within it.

Where bread becomes art
In Berlin’s ever-evolving Kreuzberg district, Keit Kreuzberg emerges as a standout, a bakery that combines bread with design. Designed by Studio Michael Burman, the interior of Keit strips away excess and invites thought and reflection. At its core lies a historic millstone, repurposed as a sculptural counter. Douglas fir forms the benches and shelving bases, adding warmth. Shelves of brushed stainless steel let each loaf feel like a work of art on display. The walls are clad in handmade washi paper, a nod to craftsmanship and Japanese restraint.
Grand Palais Paris reopens
Grand Palais.
After four years of renovation, the Grand Palais in Paris fully reopens following a major transformation led by Chatillon Architectes. The project, which began with the unveiling of the renovated Nave for the 2024 Olympic Games, is the most extensive restoration in the building’s 120-year history. The project improves public access, brings back long-concealed architectural elements, and adapts the historic structure to meet modern cultural and technical needs. During the Centre Pompidou’s own renovation period, its exhibitions will be temporarily housed in the newly restored galleries of the Grand Palais.

Everyday sculptures
In a space where minimalism encounters the art of sculpture, Porada’s coffee tables appear to have emerged from a dialogue between nature and design. Rounded, with a geometric opening in the center, made of wood, they are reminiscent of the Japanese art of shou sugi ban. Understated but full of character, they balance perfectly between aesthetics and functionality.

Whisper of the desert
Samira is the new outdoor armchair by Cantori, in collaboration with Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas. The name is a reference to the Arab tradition: she is the one who listens and tells. The chair’s design, inspired by the magic of the desert and its stillness, consists of fluid, softly curving lines. The stainlesssteel structure ensures its durability in outdoor or seaside environments, while the eco-leather upholstery in cream, olive and petroleum hues combines elegance and sustainability.

Born in Beirut and educated in Paris, Galal Mahmoud is more than just an architect – he’s a narrator of space. By blending Mediterranean heritage with modern elegance, his work is a sensual dialogue where the East meets the West. Known for his distinctive approach to hospitality design, Mahmoud does not only create impressive architectural environments but memorable experiences.
In recent years, his presence in Greece has "given birth" to architectural masterpieces, with projects like Myconian DEOS and Sunrise Mykonos, redefining luxury in the Greek landscape. In this discussion, Mahmoud reflects on the significance of light, the poetics of materials, and the tremendous value of locality. The result? A deeply emotional and subtly radical perspective on what it means to design for people – not just for spaces.
You often say that architecture can evoke a sense of hospitality. How do you transfer the Mediterranean concept of hospitality into spatial design, especially in projects like Myconian DEOS or Sunrise Mykonos? What feeling would you like guests to leave with? Architecture, to me, is not just about design – it’s an experience. It’s the feeling you get when you walk into a space and a seamless connection is created between the interior and the exterior, between history and materiality, between light and body. You cannot break down experi-
ence into individual components. It must be cohesive, choreographed. The moment you enter, the way you move around, where you stop, the way you greet people, the way you sit, the way you look at the sea and feel the light. It’s all part of the experience, and each one affects the other.
You talked about "choreography" in design. What do you mean by that?
Space is not static. It’s like a narrative, a script. It’s like directing life. The way you move through space, your shift in perspective through the transition between indoor and outdoor spaces; it’s like choreographing movements, looks, silences. It’s an interactive experience. I want people to have a sense of "living" in a space, to be able to hear it and feel it. That’s why I believe we don’t design buildings – we create experiences.
What do you believe is so special about the Mediterranean identity?
The Mediterranean is unique because it’s not just a location – it’s a spirit, inherently intertwined with history, light, nature, and humanity. It’s more than just geography; it’s a way of life. And this "harmonious integration" as I call it – where the exterior is a natural extension of the interior – is a fundamental Mediterranean element. On the islands, you view history as something tangible, not as a narrative. It’s present. You don’t have to explain it. You feel it.
And how does light influence the way you design?
The light in Greece is dazzling. It’s poetic, but also challenging. In Mykonos, for example, you may want a west-facing room for a sunset view, but it can be quite vexing by 4 p.m. You have to protect yourself. Thus, the challenge is not merely a "playful manipulation" of light, but its skillful management. You shouldn’t try to block light, rather, use it wisely – treat it as an ally and not a threat.
What does the concept of "local" mean to you?
It’s a determining factor. We’re not going to a locale with a mind to copy or replicate. We’re architects, and it’s not our job to create a postcard of the past. Our role is to bring forth a broader concept of local through contemporary discourse and respect. Not a copy, but an extension. This is what we did at DEOS in Mykonos: a project modern in form, but deeply embedded in the island’s culture, using materials, patterns, and structures that are part of the landscape.
How do you actually approach tradition?
Through dialogue. When artisans know how to work with stone, marble, ceramic art, I don’t try to change them. I ask them to work with what they know, and together we experiment with new applications. For instance, we were inspired by the traditional white woven lace patterns found on Greek table linens and adapted them to glass designs, which were placed as partitions to separate private and shared spaces in the hotel rooms. This way, tradition is reinterpreted in
contemporary context without losing its core essence.
Is there a certain Greek material, a myth, or emotional context that you often return to as a source of inspiration?
The islands. The light. The thousand shades of blue! I’ve had a deep connection with the sea since I was a child. My father had a small boat in Lebanon, and every time I work in an island, that sense of magic keeps coming back. Sitting and gazing the sea, with the sun casting light on the islands… I can’t explain it. It’s like a prayer.
A friend of mine once said, "If you don’t believe in God, come to Greece. You’ll start believing." And he is so right!
When working in Greece, have you encountered cultural or creative "frictions"? In what way do these challenges impact the design process, especially in remote islands?
Fortunately, I have great associates. An excellent local architect handles the permits, so I don’t experience bureaucratic challenges. However, more importantly, my clients here are inspired. They know what they want, but they also allow for creative freedom. This builds trust and drives results. Moreover, I am accustomed to challenges. I come from Lebanon, where challenge is the norm, not the exception.
If I were to ask you to describe the "soul" of your Greek projects in one word, which word would that be – and why?
Happiness. No matter how demanding projects in Greece may be, they bring me great pleasure because I know they are developed with empathy, attention, quality, and true love for the landscape and the people. It’s a deeply human experience. Despite the challenges, every project on Greek soil gives me a strong sense of accomplishment. It exhausts me – it’s like squeezing a lemon to the last drop – but in the end, I feel fulfilled. And every time, I look forward to the next one!

“Nauma” emerged from the marriage of vintage charm and the sophistication of modern design. Interior designer Dimitris Papanastasiou drew inspiration from the heart of Paros, Naoussa, uniting the charm of the place, its cultural identity and its timeless connection with the sea. The prefix Nau- pays homage to the historical maritime heritage of the Cyclades, with references to the word “ναῦς”, the ancient Greek ship, and the stories carried by the waves. Nauma thus becomes a symbol of connection: between the place and the visitor, between tradition and innovation.
