Founded in 1906 in the heart of Florence, Pratesi has long stood as a paragon of Italian luxury, weaving together romance, artistry, and heritage into every thread of its linens. The brand’s origin story—born from a love-struck wine merchant’s gift of hand-embroidered linens—set the tone for over a century of devotion to craftsmanship and elegance. Pratesi’s collections, such as the iconic Tre Righe, originally commissioned by Coco Chanel for her Paris apartment, and the Treccia, inspired by Florentine architecture, exemplify timeless sophistication. Revered by cultural icons including Elizabeth Taylor, who famously left a hotel suite lacking Pratesi linens, as well as Yves Saint Laurent, Ernest Hemingway, and Lee Radziwill, the brand has become synonymous with refined living. Today, Pratesi’s bespoke creations grace the world’s most majestic private residences, superyachts, and aviation interiors—whether adorning a villa in Tuscany, a jet soaring above the Mediterranean, or a yacht sailing along the Riviera. With custom embroidery, monograms, and sizing tailored to the most discerning clientele, Pratesi linens transform every space into a sanctuary of beauty and comfort—where history, luxury, and Italian soul converge.

DECORATING FROM AFAR

Vacation home Interior Design specialist, Jamie Roddy of EdenLA Interiors shares sage advice.

Q: Jamie, what’s the first thing someone should do when planning to remodel or decorate a vacation home from afar?

A: The very first step is assembling the right team — and that starts with finding a building crew who is not only excellent at what they do, but also very familiar with the local city codes. I always advise clients to get referrals from neighbors who’ve lived in the area a long time or from realtors with reputations they protect fiercely. These are the people who know which crews consistently deliver quality work and navigate inspections with ease. Because we specialize in vacation homes, we are always working from afar. Your building crew for your vacation home should never be chosen based on lowest price alone.

Q: How do you recommend managing a project when you can’t be on site regularly?

A: Communication and accountability are everything. One of my non-negotiables is requiring weekly photographic updates from the contractor. This keeps my team and clients in the loop, prevents misunderstandings, and ensures that problems get caught early. Technology makes this easy — it’s just a matter of making sure the team treats it as part of their normal process.

Q: What’s your advice for receiving and handling furnishings and décor while the home is under construction?

A: This is where professional infrastructure makes all the difference. I strongly recommend using a third-party warehouse that specializes in receiving, inspecting, and storing furniture and décor for designers. This way, if there are damages, they’re caught early and replacements can be ordered long before install day. When the house is ready, that same warehouse team can deliver everything in one seamless installation — no boxes piled in your garage and no delivery-day chaos.

Q: You’re a bicoastal designer. How do you prepare clients for the culture and pace of Florida projects?

A: I always remind my clients that Florida operates on its own beautiful time. Things may not happen on the exact timeline they’re used to, and that’s okay. Part of embracing a second home is embracing its rhythm — so don’t force your norms on your new neighborhood.

Q: What about the “little things” that make a vacation home move-in ready?

A: At EdenLA, we have what we call our turn-key list. It includes every last detail — from the Roomba and the water hoses to the hangers, toilet brushes, and cleaning supplies. When my clients walk into their new home for the first time, I want them to be able to pour a glass of wine, take a deep breath, and enjoy it — not run to the store for trash bags. We’re happy to share this extensive checklist with anyone who reaches out and asks for it.

Q: How should clients think about design choices for a vacation home versus their primary residence?

A: This is where I encourage people to have more fun! A vacation home is the perfect place to explore a side of your personality that you might not live with every day. Go bold with color, try that wallpaper you’ve been dreaming about, or design a room around a mood rather than a function. This house is meant for relaxation and joy — let the design reflect that.

This never before offered property is one of the few homes sitting directly on Fairway 5 of the renowned Jupiter Island Club. Set on .63 acres, this Bermuda-style estate includes a five-bedrooms main house and a two-bedroom guest house, added in 1990. With breathtaking views of the golf course and vibrant sunsets, this property provides a rare opportunity for someone seeking both privacy and the ability to entertain on a grand scale. While largely original, the home’s generous footprint and timeless style provide an ideal foundation for a thoughtful renovation or a bespoke new build. Follow your dream, home.

As a property owner, Devon envisioned a company that delivered seamless operations, elevated guest experiences, and reliable returns. GALLERY ROW

A Conversation with Lawrence Leyderman

Q: Your work captures both vast landscapes and intimate details— how do you decide what to focus on in a scene?

Every scene tells a story. Sometimes I head out with a clear plan— knowing the light and conditions—other times I let the landscape guide me. Vast vistas often need large prints to show their scale, while intimate scenes can stand strong on their own. I also shoot panoramas, stitching frames to bring out the full breadth of a place.

Q: Do you consider your photography more of a documentary of nature, or an artistic interpretation of it?

It’s both. I capture nature in its rawest form, but usually during the most dramatic light or conditions. That alone adds artistry. Nature gives me the raw materials, but the way I frame and tell the story turns it into art. My goal is to translate what it felt like to stand there.

Q: You describe your work as more than decoration—that each print carries a story. Can you share one image and the story behind it?

One that stands out is Electric Night, the lightning shot over the pier. I was the only one left on the beach—everyone else had run for cover, but I couldn’t leave. I’d been chasing this shot for a while. I set up my tripod low with a rain sleeve over the camera, then stepped back about 25 feet, watching it like a hawk as the tide crashed in. Since it was the only tall metal object around, I wouldn’t stand next to it. At times I even lay flat in the sand, hoping it lowered my chances. Then it happened—a white-out bolt so bright the world vanished. The thunder shook my chest, and only the camera revealed it had lined up perfectly with the pier. My hands were still shaking as I stared at the shot.

Q: You describe your prints as “windows into the serene and magnificent world”—what do you hope people feel when they look at your work?

Peace and wonder. Some images are calm, like a sunrise over water. Others carry the energy of a storm or the drama of lightning. Nature is both serene and powerful, and I want my work to reflect that balance. My hope is that viewers feel transported, as if they’re standing there with me.

Q: From fine art to education, you’re launching the South Florida School of Photography. What inspired it, and how does teaching fit into your creative journey?

Teaching has always been a natural extension of my photography. I’ve found as much joy in helping others as in creating my own work. The school grew from that passion—to share not just techniques, but a way of seeing differently. I’ve been told my energy sparks life in others, and that’s what drives me: creating something within them that lasts long after the class is over.

Q: What makes your workshops and the South Florida School of Photography unique, and what can participants expect?

It’s the mix of artistry, adventure, and hands-on learning. We head into the field to create, then bring images back to critique and refine—

that cycle makes everything click. My workshops welcome all skill levels and focus on creating without overwhelming hikes. The camaraderie is as important as the photography, and what excites me most is seeing people begin to see differently. Locally, I’ll be teaching through Palm Beach Gardens Parks & Recreation and launching the South Florida School of Photography on Nov 1st in Jupiter. Beyond Florida, I lead U.S. and international workshops, as well as bespoke, privately curated photo adventures.

Q: For someone considering one of your prints, how do you recommend they select the right piece for their space?

Start with the piece that speaks to you—it will never get old. Then think about the mood you want for the space. A seascape can bring calm, while a storm adds drama. One client hung a stormy seascape above his piano because he wanted to channel that same intensity when he played. I also help collectors choose size, framing, and vibe so the art truly fits their space.

Q: Do you have upcoming workshops or destinations you’re especially excited about?

Yes—trips across the U.S. and internationally, from Utah’s Badlands and Colorado’s fall foliage to Oregon’s coasts and Iceland’s 2026 solar eclipse. Closer to home, I’m also excited about Florida-based workshops in astro, wildlife, and coastal photography. Whether near or far, they all share the same focus: adventure, learning, and unforgettable experiences.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like readers to know or a final thought you’d like to leave with them?

I’d like to share what I’m up to now and what’s on the radar in the near future. If you’d like to stay in the loop about my workshop schedule, upcoming events, or local meetups, please send me your email so we can stay connected.

DANA PEARSALL

Dana Pearsall is the 3rd generation in her family with a career in residential and commercial construction. Her Grandfather, Elbert Rawls, was a master carpenter and custom home builder in Williamston, NC. Her father, Phil Rawls, was a designer and developer of nursing homes projects throughout North Carolina.

Dana began in Interior Design with a focus on the best of materials with the least amount of fuss. She feels that fine woods, fabrics, and the positioning of design elements lead to a comfortable environment and reflect the personality of her clients.

Creating these spaces led to Dana’s interest in going deeper into the structural aspect of a home. She found that achieving a beautiful flow actually began from the outside in, where the positioning of walls, common areas, private spaces, and lighting sources are where great design actually begins.

Dana Pearsall is a state licensed general contractor in the Palm Beach area with 30 years in real estate and design. This makes her uniquely qualified to approach your project with an eye on how design and construction choices create a solid investment and add to the enjoyment of your home.

COASTAL COLLECTION THE FINEST WATERFRONT HOMES

SOPHISTICATION BY THE INLET

Katherine Shenaman transforms a Jupiter inlet home into a breezy retreat that balances tropical whimsy with timeless sophistication.

Designing homes in Palm Beach, and the surrounding areas, without falling into stereotypes can prove difficult. However, Katherine Shenaman has mastered the art of balancing context and individuality to create paradisal spaces that feel one-of-a-kind. In the case of this breezy, elegant home on the Jupiter Inlet, Shenaman found inspiration with the client himself, who she says is the embodiment of an island-loving character straight out of an adventure novel.

“He was the perfect client in that he knows what he likes and has a good sense of design, but he really allowed me to create a vision and bring it to life,” says Shenaman. “It’s definitely an ‘island chic’ home but with a more relaxed feel for a mature gentleman who enjoys being on the water and hosting those close to him.”

However, before she could even contemplate design schemes and color palettes, Shenaman had to tackle some tricky architectural challenges in order to update remnants of bad design from 20 years prior. The entry into the home had to be properly defined, and then the multi-level

says Shenaman. “It’s all very appropriate for south Florida, but more importantly it fits the client.

ceiling details in the living room had to be removed. Next, the dining room and kitchen were reconfigured, which included eliminating an unnecessary entrance, and then changing the layout of the kitchen cabinetry and appliances. Additional counter space allowed everything to feel more open, and once the layout in the adjoining family room increased, this room eventually became the client’s favorite space in the home.

When it came time to decorate, Shenaman leaned into richer and more masculine shades of a tropical color palette, balanced with earth tones in order to create spaces that exuded island elegance. A custom hexagon limestone pattern was chosen to run throughout the home, creating a uniquely sophisticated foundation for more casual decorating. Each of the four bedrooms, and their adjoining bathrooms, allowed the designer to play with different schemes that appeased the client’s need for color and sense of whimsy. She relied on woven materials, particularly in the main living room to add in some island flair. She then balanced the sculptural furnishings with a host of collected objects to give each space the feeling of being in a breezy, dream-like home on the water, created intentionally to give the clients, and his guests, the feeling of being on vacation.

Carefully selected works of decorative art also enhance the design and help keep the spaces from being stereotypically “coastal” or “beachy.” Bold abstract pieces can be found in vignettes across the home (including an etching by Picasso), although some of the most picturesque vignettes can be found through the windows, particularly in the breakfast room. The client thoroughly enjoyed re-working the exterior spaces and took great care to create an oasis in the backyard, full of sea grapes and other lushly tropical plantings.

A deGournay silk mural in the dining room and an artisanal-style wallpaper by F. Schumacher in the family room help give a layered and artful feel to the home, as does the hand-painted kitchen backsplash tile from Morocco. Unique lighting and vintage pieces also add elements that create a sense of longevity, as though the home has been curated over time. Both pattern and texture add liveliness to each space without teetering into the “busy” territory, and consequently, Shenaman was able to construct a fresh but elegant feel that the client ended up loving. A combination of sophisticated architectural elements, a nature-inspired color palette, and the right touch of restraint, Shenaman has created a veritable retreat indoors and out that is perfect for a Chicagoan by geography yet an islander at heart.

Every detail of this extraordinary estate has been meticulously designed, blending exceptional craftsmanship, modern innovation, and timeless sophistication. Nestled along the pristine Aiken Country Club Golf Course and less than 30 minutes from Augusta, this custom-built home defines luxury with its bespoke features and high-end upgrades. This rare offering presents an unparalleled opportunity to own a home that seamlessly combines architectural beauty, cutting-edge amenities, and an unrivaled golf course setting.

A MODERN REVIVAL AT THE SURF CLUB

Love Lake Studio reimagines a Surf Club residence that balances bold modernism with refined warmth.

When this energetic couple—who share a passion for cars, boating, flying, and James Bond—told Genevieve Love Lake, Principal, and Emma Frayssignes, Senior Designer of Love Lake Studio they were moving from their existing two bedroom Surf Club condo to a four-bedroom, the designers immediately knew the design had to reflect their combined adventurous spirit, but also play on their individuality . Deeply appreciative of the iconic Richard Meier–designed building, which opened in 2017, they wanted a home that respected the architectural language of the space while feeling uniquely their own.

The original condo already featured standout elements: a sleek Boffi kitchen, travertine floors, and seamlessly integrated doors. The design challenge was to build on this foundation, creating a space that felt cohesive with the existing design while aligning with the couple’s “sporty-modern” aesthetic and dynamic lifestyle.

Functionality was key. As the CEO’s work life often merges with his home life, Genevieve and Emma were intentional in weaving workspaces into the main living areas—designing moments where productivity and relaxation could coexist naturally.

“To balance the clean modern lines, we layered in warm wood tones and rich textiles, bringing softness and intimacy to the openplan layout,” the designers share. Bold, expressive stone became the anchor for the entire concept—selected during a hands-on visit to the slab yard, which gave the clients a tactile, emotional connection to their selections.

“It’s great when clients appreciate the architectural details,” notes Emma. “We proposed a full lighting re-haul for the space, with a ceiling plan which was not based on a grid - but more on flow of space and ambience.” To preserve the ceiling height and maintain the panoramic ocean views, a minimally invasive solution was

implemented: a 2-inch ceiling drop using Apure’s sleek 10mm “Porsche Design” fixtures. The result was a layered lighting scheme that enhances both the function and feeling of each room.

To keep the open-concept space cohesive and warm, A delicate Armani texture linen wallpaper was applied throughout the home.

Genevieve Love Lake reflects, “This project was a ‘full circle’ moment for me. When I was in real estate, my first major new development sales project was the Surf Club Four Seasons. I moved back to Miami from New York, sold the project through the construction phase and watched it come to life. I never could have imagined that 10 years later, I would be designing a home in one of Miami’s most iconic properties that I had such an intense fondness for.”

POWDER

A distinct departure from the main living spaces, the powder room was designed as a jewel box—compact, bold, and unexpected –with the Super Crystal Verde quartzite as the main feature. The smoked mirror and gold foil ceiling expand the space visually, while Gucci wallpaper adds a graphic contrast to the stone. “This powder room is definitely not what you would expect in this home, and that’s exactly the [rhetorical] point” says Genevieve. The integrated sink is carved from the same Super Crystal Verde quartzite and paired with the Bond collection faucet from Waterworks, combining function with sleek, tailored detail.

LIVING

The living room features a Minotti sectional, Pierre Frey ottoman, custom Soraya Osorio coffee table, a Poliform accent table, Enne lounge chair, Art and Loom rug and Giapato & Coombs floor to ceiling column lights.

“Mixing such a bold onyx and green marble in an open plan made us reluctant at first,” adds Emma. The client fell in love with both materials and was inspired by the variety of hues that the ocean reflects and felt that both could work in the space. We pulled mostly neutral fabrics with wood and pulled coordinating fabrics - for the stone to be the true showpiece of the entire space, and ultimately an extension of the ocean views.

DINING

The dining area is an elegant balance of artistry and restraint, designed to capture both the ocean view and a sense of effortless sophistication. A floating, airy “jellyfish” Bocci fixture drifts above the custom Casa Dio dining table—crafted from travertine with metal inlay and wood—creating a sculptural focal point that mirrors the fluidity of the sea beyond. The custom ceiling- and floor-mounted bar unit adds architectural intrigue and functionality, blending seamlessly into the open-concept layout. Enne dining chairs introduce soft curves and tailored comfort, completing a space that feels both luxurious and intimately livable.

KITCHEN/MEDIA

The Boffi kitchen opens into a newly defined media space, separated by four 360-degree rotating walnut panels that are custom designed with louvered detailing inspired by airplane wings. These panels allow the area to shift effortlessly from open and airy to private and cinematic, maintaining a fluid relationship with the ocean view. A Dedalus marble slab and Gabriel Scott smoked glass LED fixture add layers of sophistication and visual depth.

Echoing the theme of flight, millwork columns carry through the living and media areas, reinterpreted at a smaller scale to appear as if they pierce through bronze metal shelving. The media room itself features a rich Donghia sectional in Sapphire mohair, a custom travertine console, and an Art + Loom rug, creating a grounded yet luxurious atmosphere ideal for both relaxation and entertaining.

KIDS ROOM

This playful yet sophisticated kids’ room blends comfort with elevated design. A custom, marshmallow-inspired bed upholstered in Dedar fabric anchors the space, inviting both rest and imagination. Beneath it, a pair of Double Layer Art + Loom “fluffy” rugs add texture, perfectly complementing the rich walnut wall by Casa Metier that lends a refined, organic backdrop. Pops of color from Hermès throws and pillows introduce a touch of whimsy, while curated décor tie the room together with an effortlessly modern aesthetic.

His Office

This space was a unique departure from the open plan area. The owner’s desk for over 40 years, which was already vintage when he bought it, was refinished and a stone top was added.

Blue hue accents of Lapis Lazuli stone, a navy leather Eames executive chair, and an Art + Loom rug give a nod to the marine environment and the white striping layered into the millwork complete the luxury yacht vibe.

Primary Bath/Closet

The primary bath and closet exude refined luxury, anchored by the striking Sage and Orange Onyx chosen by the client. Knowing the stone would be the star, the design team ensured every other element remained tonal and understated to let its bold veining shine. Oak wood cabinetry and Bond Waterworks fixtures bring warmth and balance, while tinted bronze glass adds depth and sophistication. Thoughtful details—like the mirror with an integrated TV, speakers in the shower, and a custom closet with a central display—combine high-end functionality with serene elegance. The result is a spa-like retreat that feels both modern and timeless.

BREAKING CYCLES, BUILDING FUTURES

Vina (pictured, right) was raised in a mud hut during a civil war in South Sudan and excelled in the classroom. While studying nursing, she survived a rebel attack that killed two fellow students and forced her to flee to a displacement camp in a neighboring country. As one of Mercy Beyond Border’s first scholarship recipients, Vina was re-enrolled in another nursing program, and today she works six days a week as a registered nurse in a rural clinic. She is also the mother of two toddlers, the president of the local PTA, and a volunteer tutor for young children. On one project visit, Mercy Beyond Borders staff witnessed her saving the life of a comatose child nearly dead from cholera.

Today, Vina stands proudly in front of the newly built clinic in her childhood village, surrounded by family and neighbors. From hut to heroine, her journey is nothing short of inspiring. Vina is one of many Mercy Beyond Borders scholarship recipients that is using the power of education to transform her community.

These are the dreams of the women and girls of South Sudan. Yet most of them are still denied what the 21st century recognizes as basic human rights. The force most likely to change that over time is the education of girls.

Among the Toposa people, wealth has always been measured in cattle. Girls are treated as currency, traded for dowries of cows. As a result, families often see little reason to send daughters to school. In fact, their culture has long considered girls to be “worth less than cows.”

Mercy Beyond Borders, a tax-exempt U.S. nonprofit working with women and girls in five countries of extreme poverty, respects other cultures and does not attempt to change them from the outside. By educating girls—bringing their dignity, voices, and talents to the fore— the organization knows that cultures will evolve to everyone’s benefit. Its mantra is clear: When women learn, women matter. Then everything changes.

Against daunting odds, Mercy Beyond Borders focuses in places of extreme poverty, enrolling girls from rural villages into primary schools and then supporting them through high school and university with a wide range of wrap-around services. Rather than owning or operating schools, Mercy Beyond Borders invests in human capital. Beyond paying for tuition and books, the organization provides lodging and meals, computer training, campus nurses, libraries, monthly leadership workshops, and mentoring.

Each Scholar is engaged in community volunteer work, and their academic and personal milestones are celebrated. Ultimately, Mercy Beyond Borders alumnae become change-makers in their own communities.

Education spans many years, but one immediate and crucial benefit is that keeping girls in school reduces the incidence of early forced marriages, a particularly brutal form of human trafficking.

Many of these girls, some as young as nine, are fugitives. They have escaped forced marriages, risking their lives to flee to the relative safety of the only all-girl primary school in South Sudan, which Mercy Beyond Borders supports. Many bear physical scars from being lashed for resisting marriage. More than 80 of them are among the school’s 1,200 students. They are known as “Champion Girls” for their courage. Living at the school year-round, they cannot leave campus for fear of being recaptured by the older men to whom they were sold. For them, going home is no longer possible. Despite these hardships, the girls are thrilled to be in school. Motivated to earn top marks, they strive to qualify for high school and university scholarships through Mercy Beyond Borders. Their transformation is remarkable.

Mercy Beyond Borders intentionally chooses to work in extremely challenging places: South Sudan, Haiti, Malawi, and the displacement camps of Kenya and Uganda. Each year, the organization supports the education of 2,500 girls and young women—girls who would otherwise be confined to huts, performing manual labor all day, with no chance to develop their talents or learn their worth. Without such

opportunities, they could never join the growing ranks of Mercy Beyond Borders alumnae already serving their countries as civil engineers, agronomists, healthcare professionals, IT experts, teachers, social workers, and entrepreneurs.

Mercy Beyond Borders’ Mission Statement

Forging ways for women and girls in places of extreme poverty to learn, connect, and lead.

Mercy Beyond Borders invites others to join in this work, so that more girls may walk through newly opened doors and flourish.

To donate, please visit the “Ways to Give” page at www.mercybeyondborders.org There you’ll find ways to donate such as through phone, mail, corporate matching and more.

Your gift of $500 will keep a girl in high school for a full year. That’s tuition & books, room & board, academic counseling, and monthly leadership workshops.

On the home page you can sign up for our eNews which profiles the story of one Scholar each month. Prepare to be inspired by the ways these bright girls are rising from extreme poverty to professional careers, from huts to heroines!
