As an artistic director and director/choreographer, my role is to interpret the material in a play or musical and create an experience for the audience that engages, entertains, and—on the most beautiful of occasions—opens hearts and minds. ♥️ In that vein, I want to acknowledge that I am in no way a mental health professional or a behavioral health specialist. Luckily, being on the U’s campus puts us into close proximity to some brilliant mental health experts and we have been fortunate enough to partner with the University of Utah School Mental Health Collaborative. We are incredibly grateful to the entire team at USMHC, who have worked with the cast and creative team to more deeply understand and interpret this sensitive material.
When PTC decided to program Dear Evan Hansen for this season and I revisited the script, I was struck by the fact that almost nine years later, nearly all of the central issues in the show have become even more relevant and concerning. According to statistics from the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, suicide is the leading cause of death for Utahns ages 10-17. For decades, Utah has consistently ranked in the top 10 among states with teens
experiencing significant mental health issues, and the rise of our digital-first culture isn’t helping. Social media’s influence has grown stronger than ever. While it can shine a positive light on people or situations that deserve attention, it can also bring unwanted exposure—especially for teenagers—turning scrutiny into an unbearable burden.
It’s not for me—or anyone else—to tell you how to experience this play. But if you leave the theatre with the urge to reach out to someone, to check in, to ask how they’re really doing, trust that instinct. And if you find yourself reflecting on something, or about to post on social media, maybe take a moment to pause and think it through before you hit “send.” ✨ Sometimes that extra moment of care can mean more than we realize.
Thank you for being here with us.
PBS Utah is still here. For you.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
Emergency Exits are indicated to your right and left in the theatre. Please identify the exit closest to your seat location in case an emergency occurs.
Videotaping, photographing, or other video or audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited. This includes photos taken by phone.
SMART WATCHES, CELL PHONES, AND CAMERAS ARE DISRUPTIVE; even when set on silent or vibrate, they may disrupt wireless sound equipment. Please leave your electronics in the car, or turn them off entirely while in the theatre.
TEXTING is disturbing to the actors and your fellow audience members. Do not text during the performance.
If you might need to be reached during a performance, leave your exact seat location with the box office. The number for emergency calls is 801-581-6963.
We have a hearing assistance system that allows our hard-of-hearing patrons to sit in any seat in the house. Collateral required; inquire at coat check.
We welcome all persons. Those with special requirements should request assistance in advance.
Refreshments are not permitted in the auditorium, but are available in the main floor lobby pre-show, and during intermission. Bottled water and approved PTC drink
containers are allowed in the theatre.
University of Utah is a non-smoking campus, both inside and outside all buildings.
Evening performances are at 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; Saturday matinees at 2 :00 p.m. Please avoid arriving after curtain time. To avoid disturbing other patrons, latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. This policy has been instituted at the request of many of our patrons.
Season ticket holders may exchange their tickets for another performance of the same play by notifying the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date. Tickets are non-refundable.
You may donate your tickets, helping yourself and Pioneer Theatre Company. If you are unable to attend a production, make a tax-deductible gift of your tickets to the Theatre so that we may re-sell them. Call the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date.
The Patron Services staff will serve you from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. During the run of a show, the box office is open extended hours Monday through Saturday.
No children under age 5 are admitted to performances.
MANAGING DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Dear Friends and Fellow Theatre Lovers,
At the heart of Dear Evan Hansen is a story about connection, belonging, and the reminder that none of us is truly alone. It asks us to see each other fully and to recognize our shared humanity, even in moments of isolation and uncertainty. Theatre itself offers that same gift: when the lights dim and the story unfolds, we are brought together in a shared experience that uplifts, challenges, and connects us.
Pioneer Theatre Company has long been committed to bringing bold, meaningful stories like Dear Evan Hansen to our stage. But producing world-class theatre and making it accessible to everyone in our community requires more than artistic passion. It requires the collective support of people like you, who believe in the power of live theatre to inspire and transform.
This season, we have been entrusted with a remarkable opportunity. An anonymous donor has pledged a $1.2 million challenge grant, a transformational gift administered by the Community Foundation of Utah, that we can unlock only if our community rises to meet it. Every contribution you make, no matter the size, helps us reach this goal and ensures that PTC can continue to tell stories that matter, support the next generation of theatre artists, and welcome audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
Just as Dear Evan Hansen reminds us that “you will be found,” your support affirms that the arts will always have a place in Utah, that PTC will continue to be found, and to be a home for extraordinary theatre.
We invite you to join us in this moment. Help us meet the challenge, and together we will secure the future of Pioneer Theatre Company.
With gratitude,
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

When you pair “adventure ready” with “city savvy,” you’ll find a vehicle that lives at the intersection of downtown avenues and mountain roads: the BMW X3.
With a reimagined design and sporty handling, the latest iteration of this icon doesn’t just tackle any journey with ease; it draws attention while doing it.
And it wouldn’t earn the X3 name without versatility at its heart and a premium interior that makes it unmistakably BMW.
Visit BMW of Murray or BMW of Pleasant Grove for exceptional offers on the BMW X3.
