As we enter the holiday season, I am reminded of how fortunate we are to share this time of year with you. The holidays bring us together with family and friends, around tables filled with food, laughter, and great wine. It is a season that reminds us why we do what we do—to create wines that become part of these moments.
This year is especially meaningful, as PlumpJack Estate marks its 30th anniversary. Over the past three decades, we’ve grown from a single Oakville estate into a family of wineries spanning Napa Valley—from PlumpJack Estate in Oakville, to CADE Estate and 13th Vineyard on Howell Mountain, to Odette Estate in the Stags Leap District, and to Adaptation and Oso Vineyard. What unites them all is the dedication of our winemakers—Aaron Miller at PlumpJack, Danielle Cyrot at CADE and 13th Vineyard, and Andrew Haugen at Odette and Adaptation—whose passion and skill shape every bottle we share with you.
As I look back on thirty years, I feel immense gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunity to make wines that reflect this remarkable place. Gratitude for the colleagues and friends who bring energy and commitment to our work every day. And above all, gratitude for you—our supporters, who have welcomed us into your homes and celebrations, year after year.

From the outside, the appearance is not that of a winery. It’s an old rustic barn that was built as a horse stable back in the 1880s. It doesn’t look like somewhere you can make wine, but you go inside and you see this amazing winery that’s been converted and adapted into a winery. In 2000, we took the world by surprise when we debuted our 1997 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, with half the bottles finished under screw cap.
We were the first to adopt this closure for luxury red wine, and we did it for one reason: quality . More than twenty years later, we continue bottling half of our Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and a third of our Estate Cabernet Sauvignon under screw cap.

“I love CADE first and foremost because of the exceptional wines we make from Howell Mountain. This unique terroir that’s ‘above the fog’ (1,400-2,600 feet in elevation) produces wines that are intense in flavor and color, exhibit a unique aromatic profile, and are structured and age-worthy. It’s like a different world on Howell Mountain. Even though it’s close to the bustle of St. Helena, the winding mountain roads and forested landscape give Howell Mountain the feel of venturing off into uncharted territory. Our winery sits at 1,700 feet and has stunning, panoramic views overlooking the Napa Valley from St. Helena down to Carneros.”
“When I am working at 13th Vineyard, I can feel the history of the property. The winery was built in 1886, and back then, let’s just say, it wasn’t easy to get there or to make wine (no electricity, no cars, etc). When I think of the amount of work that went into planting the vineyard and building a 3-story gravity feed stone winery over 140 years ago, it must have been because it was a special place. And after making wine from our 82-acre estate on Howell Mountain, I know now that yes, it is very special. The wines are dense, lush, intense, and packed with black fruit flavors and beautiful aromas of spice, dark fruits, and chocolate. The vineyard is planted with 10 different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon as well as some Petit Verdot and Malbec. I feel like I have so many options to play with when blending the clones/varieties. It makes the job fun in that I can move the wine into a certain style because I have so many options to play with!”

Adaptation, in its purest sense, evokes the transformative power of resilience and refinement. Originating from the Latin ‘ adaptō ’, it serves as a dynamic bridge between a composition rewritten into a new form and the adjustment to environmental conditions. This duality manifests in Adaptation wines, which capture the essence of Napa Valley’s distinct terroir.
A NEW CHAPTER
Coinciding serendipitously with a period where the need to adapt became central to our lives, the new label served as a reflection, both aesthetically and symbolically, of our collective resilience and an ever-evolving industry.
THE FIRST ITERATION
“Our goal from the start with the Adaptation label was to create an experience, whether at home or at one of our wineries, that is both dynamic and approachable, that, like Napa Valley—and the wine industry in general—is constantly changing and developing.”
The new labels drew inspiration from a scientific visualization tool used to map DNA, called Circos. Each label’s Circos design was specific to the genetics and traits of the varietal.
The acquisition of Oso Vineyard secured the future of Adaptation. Starting with the 2022 vintage releases, the labels will now feature the bear (“oso” in Spanish), honoring the land and marking this milestone.
THE TURNING POINT NEXT RELEASE: ADAPTATION RESERVE
The first Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, crafted from the best fruit at Oso Vineyard, will debut as the flagship expression of Adaptation.
