Strathallan Pupil Secures Place on Prestigious Actor Musicianship Degree at Mountview

Strathallan School pupil Olwen H has secured a coveted place on the BA (Hons) Performance – Actor Musicianship course at Mountview, one of the UK’s most prestigious drama schools.

Combining acting, music, singing and movement, the highly competitive degree develops performers into what Olwen proudly describes as a “quadruple threat”—and for her, it’s a dream come true.

“I still can’t quite believe it,” said Olwen, who studies Art, Drama and Music A Levels at Strathallan.

“I’ve been working towards something like this for yearssometimes without even realising it. I started playing music when I was five and completely fell in love with acting. The chance to combine both is incredible.”

Initially considering a gap year, Olwen hadn’t planned to apply for drama school this year. That changed when she discovered the Actor Musicianship course and one of her teachers encouraged her to go for it.

“Once I found Mountview’s course, everything just clicked. I wasn’t expecting to get in as some of the other applicants were older or had done foundation years - but I gave it everything I had. I’m so glad I did.”

Set to start in September, Olwen credits her teachers at Strathallan for encouraging her to take the leap.

“Mrs Carr-Bates cast me in my first lead role and she’s been amazing. Coming to Strath gave me opportunities I’d never imagined—like playing Amélie in our school production. Mr Hamilton encouraged me to believe in myself and go for it. The theatre and music department here are such creative spaces, and being mostly student-led makes it even more special. We get to work hands-on with everything from lighting to stage design, learning from and with our peers.”

Head of Performing Arts and Drama, Mrs Bronwen Carr-Bates, said she couldn’t be prouder.

“Olwen has been an absolute asset to Strathallan. She’s thrown herself into every opportunity in drama and music and has grown into a confident, versatile performer. I’m so proud she’s taking her next step at Mountview—it’s a huge achievement and a well-deserved one. We’ll miss her dearly, but we’ll be cheering her on every step of the way. Don’t forget us when you’re famous, Olwen!”

Strathallan Pupils Help Mark Milestone in Humanitarian Aid for Ukraine

Strathallan School pupils helped mark a significant milestone in humanitarian support for Ukraine, attending the departure of the 100th articulated lorry filled with donations and aid organised by Tayside And Strathearn Help for Ukraine (TASH)Scotland’s largest humanitarian aid hub for Ukraine.

The event was especially meaningful for pupil Calum B, who was recognised as TASH’s highest individual fundraiser, having raised nearly £8,000 over the past three years. Joined by fellow piper Archie D, Calum proudly piped the lorry off as it began its journey to those in need.

Since January, Third Form pupils at Strathallan have been actively supporting TASH each week as part of the school’s Third Form programme. Under the guidance of Chaplain Rev Wylie, pupils have committed two days a week to assist the charity’s dedicated volunteers—sorting donations, filling aid boxes, and gaining valuable hands-on experience of humanitarian work in action.

This week’s milestone follows a series of meaningful contributions from the school community. In March, pupils had the privilege of delivering and stacking two pallets of canned food - nore than 1,500 tins collected across our School Houses since February. These joined the 99th lorry bound for Ukraine, packed and dispatched from the TASH warehouse. Many of the cans featured messages of hope and support written by our Ukrainian students, adding a deeply personal connection to the donation.

Strathallan is proud to stand alongside TASH in delivering real help where it is needed most. This growing partnership continues to inspire and educate our pupils, offering opportunities to make a tangible difference in the lives of others.

Top-Flight Football Talent to Lead Coaching at Strathallan

Strathallan School is delighted to welcome former professional footballer Jamie Ness, who will begin delivering highperformance football coaching sessions on campus from August 2025.

With over 200 appearances at the top levels of the game across a 13-year career, Jamie brings a wealth of experience to Strathallan. Jamie went on to play in the English Premier League with Stoke City before making significant contributions at clubs including Scunthorpe United, Plymouth Argyle, and Dundee FC.

Now an SFA-qualified coach, Jamie launched his own coaching academy in 2023. His passion lies in mentoring and developing young players by passing on the knowledge, skills, and mindset gained throughout his career.

From August 2025, Jamie will be offering 1-to-1 and small group football sessions at Strathallan. These sessions are open to Senior pupils of all abilities and will be tailored to individual goals and positions. He will also be supporting the wider football programme at the school over the next academic year.

On Target: Strathallan Clay Team Aim High at Home and Abroad

Strathallan’s Clay Shooting Team members have continued to hit the mark, with pupils delivering standout performances in recent weeks at major competitions across the UK and the USA.

Ali T travelled south to compete in the prestigious Essex Masters, using the event as a warm-up and a test run with a new gun. He scored an impressive 183/200 in the sporting round before heading to Southdown Gun Club for the final Great Britain selection shoot. Ali was named Top Junior there, securing his place on the GB team for the upcoming European FITASC Championships in the Czech Republic on 22nd May.

“It’s an honour to qualify for Team GB. This will be my fifth time representing GB,” Ali said. “Balancing training with revision is going better than I expected. My main goal this year is the World Championships, then I hope to take a gap year to focus on shooting before applying to university in the US.”

Claude N crossed the Atlantic to represent the team at a charity clay shoot in North Carolina, held in support of The Honor Foundation and The Marine Raider Foundation. The event raised an outstanding £110,000 for US Special Operations veterans and their families. Competing against a strong field, Claude finished 10th overall and was named Junior High Gun, with his team also securing second place overall. “I’m happy with how I shot and already looking forward to improving next time,” he said.

Closer to home, Keir M earned Top Junior honours at the Bows Memorial Club Shoot at Cluny, shooting 30/50 against tough local competition. “I feel like I did well but I know I can keep improving,” Keir said.

Staff Boogie for a Better Tomorrow

In Chapel, we were thrilled to welcome Sharon from The Lighthouse for Perth, a local charity providing life-saving crisis support across our region.

Unlike our usual fundraising efforts, this time it was our staff taking centre stage. Their ‘Dance Like No One’s Watching’ disco over the half-term holidays raised over £1,000 for the charity, and today we were proud to present the cheque in person.

We’re excited to build a lasting partnership with Lighthouse, especially through their Mental Health Ambassador Programme, which will give our pupils the chance to help make a real difference for those facing crisis.

Strathallan’s Alana Shines at Scotland Women’s U16 Pathway Festival

Strathallan School pupil Alana H played a pivotal role at the recent Scotland Women’s U16 Pathway Festival, helping her squad – the Selkies, one of the national development teams – to two standout victories, including a historic win over the Netherlands.

In the opening fixture of the day, Alana scored a vital try in the all-Scottish clash against Scáthach, helping secure a 36–22 win for the Selkies. Her try came from a bold move she had never attempted in a match before.

“It was the first time I tried an 8 pick-and-go in a 15s game –and it worked!” she said.

Building on that momentum, the Selkies went on to defeat the Netherlands 26–20 – a significant result as it marked the first-ever victory for a Scottish U16 girls’ side against international opposition. With the U16 programme now in its third year, and this being only the second time Scotland has faced the Dutch at this level, the result represents a landmark moment for the national pathway.

Reflecting on her progress, Alana said, “Since last summer’s series, the October and December camps, and the Regional Games, I’ve been able to develop so much as a player.”

The match against the Netherlands demanded adaptability and teamwork from the squad.

“We knew they had great support, so a lot of the time we were targeting the ball and getting in quickly,” Alana explained. “There were a few times we slipped up, but our captain kept us encouraged and focused.”

Looking ahead, Alana is excited about what’s to come, “I’m only 15, so I hope I get the chance to stay in the age group a bit longer. I’m excited to see what I can develop next.”

She also credits her training with Strathallan’s Rugby Academy for strengthening both her technical skills and physical game.

“I was able to apply the rifle passes Mr Henderson taught me at the Rugby Academy in my games and all the squats I’ve done in the gym with our Head of Athletic Development, Mr Webb, have really helped my scrum form – I could see the improvements in my review videos.”

Strathallan Music Captain Secures Place on Prestigious Jazz Course at RCS

Strathallan School pupil and outgoing Captain of Music, Eleanor R, has secured a place on the prestigious BMus (Hons) Jazz course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS), one of the top conservatoires in the UK.

After five years of music-making at Strathallan, Eleanor described her acceptance onto the highly competitive programme as “a real honour and a bit of a surprise!”

Eleanor humbly credited her success to her teachers, saying, “It just shows how good the teachers are at Strathallan – they taught me everything.”

A self-taught bassist before learning guitar under the guidance of Mr Christie, Eleanor went on to expand her skills to include banjo. She performed across a wide range of genres, playing in rock bands, folk groups, and orchestras, and took on a leadership role within the school’s vibrant music community.

Eleanor also credited the school’s supportive environment and cross-departmental encouragement, saying, “I’ve always been grateful for the family feel here. I want to thank all my teachers, especially those in Music, Maths and Chemistry, who made me feel at home.”

Director of Music, Jason McAuley, said, “Eleanor’s creativity, versatility and leadership have made a lasting impact on music here at Strathallan. We are thrilled to see her talent recognised by the RCS, and we know she will continue to flourish in the next stage of her musical journey.”

Double Honour as Coach and Pupil Selected to Shoot for Team GB

Strathallan School is celebrating a remarkable double achievement as pupil Ali T and his shooting coach Clark Taylor are both selected to represent Team GB at the 2025 World FITASC Sporting Clays Championship in Cyprus next month.

Sixth Form student Ali has enjoyed an impressive season on the shooting circuit, beginning this year with a victory in the junior category and second place overall at the National Shooting Centre with an enviable score of 90/100. Against unforeseen challenges – a gun malfunction meant he had to switch equipment twice and borrow his brother’s Krieghoff – Ali’s adaptability and consistent performance placed him 5th at the Essex Masters and allowed him to take the Junior title at the final European selection shoot. This earned him a captaincy for the European Championships, where he placed 6th in the Juniors.

Most recently, Ali claimed the Junior title and joint third overall at the British Grand Prix in Bedford, winning by an impressive seven clays. This victory secured his place in the GB team once more for the FITASC World Championships in Cyprus, where once again, he will serve as Junior Captain.

Ali has also been selected to represent Scotland at the World English Sporting Championships in July.

For Clark, a Team GB selection is a career milestone. Having previously represented Scotland, he described the opportunity to now shoot for Great Britain as “an honour and a privilege.”

Paul Vallot, Head of Strathallan Shooting Academy, said, “We are incredibly proud of both Clark and Ali. Their selection marks not only a personal triumph but also a shining example of what dedication, talent, and mentorship can achieve. We will be following their progress with pride and admiration as they take on this next exciting challenge.”

Strathallan School Launches Annual Fund to Expand Game-Changing Athletic Development Programme

Strathallan School has launched its 2025 Annual Fund campaign with an ambitious plan to enhance its Athletic Development facilities, responding to soaring demand for a programme that is already transforming pupil wellbeing across the school.

In just two years, the school’s Athletic Development Programme, led by Mr Webb, has seen a 400% increase in sessions and a 300% rise in pupil participation. Designed not just for athletes but for every pupil, the programme focuses on building strength, resilience and confidence, qualities that extend far beyond sport and into all aspects of life and learning.

“In a time when young people are more sedentary than ever, our programme is helping pupils move more, feel stronger, and grow in confidence,” said Mr Webb, Head of Athletic Development. “We’re seeing happier, more motivated pupils and that’s absolutely something worth investing in.”

To support this momentum, Strathallan has announced that this year’s Annual Fund will prioritise the refurbishment of the school’s small gym, transforming it into a flexible, modern space accessible to all pupils, including the youngest in the Prep School.

The upgraded facility will better support the school’s innovative Play & Explore and Foundation & Emerging movement curriculums, with an open-plan design that encourages inclusive participation across the school community.

Aileen Wilson, Head of Development and Alumni Relations, said, “We’ve seen first-hand the positive impact this programme has had on pupils’ health, wellbeing and engagement. Our Annual Fund gives parents, alumni and supporters a way to be part of that continued success, helping us shape an environment where every pupil can thrive.”

The Annual Fund also supports other key projects across the school each year, from scholarships and bursaries to specialist teaching resources and facilities. Contributions of all sizes are welcome, and 100% of donations go directly to the chosen projects.

Speech Day 2025

We were delighted to welcome our pupils, parents, staff and honoured guests to Strathallan today as we celebrated another fantastic year in our school community.

A heartfelt thank you to our guest speaker, Professor Rachel Sandison OBE (University of Glasgow), who delivered a powerful and inspiring address on the values that unite us all.

Huge thanks to all our staff who helped make the day possible, and special shout-out to our Class of 2025, you may be leaving but you will always be Strathallians.

Strathallan’s Anna G Named in Scotland Emerging Squad for 8 Nations Tournament

Strathallan School’s Anna G has been selected to represent Scotland in the U16 Emerging Squad at the prestigious 8 Nations Tournament this summer, marking a major milestone in her hockey journey.

The rising star received the exciting news via email and was thrilled by the opportunity. “I was very excited and couldn’t wait to start playing for Scotland,” said Anna, who has shown remarkable commitment to both her sport and her studies.

Describing the selection as a “very big achievement,” Anna shared her hopes of progressing further within the national pathway, with her sights set on joining the Aspiring Squad in the future.

With fixtures against England on the horizon, Anna has been focused on her physical and mental preparation. “I’ve been fuelling well and watching my loading,” she explained. “I also stay off my phone for an hour before match meets.”

Eager to develop her tactical understanding of the game, Anna is looking forward to testing herself at a new level of competition. “I’m most excited to grow my knowledge of the game and experience international hockey with this team,” she said.

Balancing the demands of elite sport with schoolwork is no small feat, but Anna credits her rest days for helping her stay on top of her academic responsibilities. “I try and catch up with homework on my rest days,” she added.

Representing her country in a match against England is a proud moment for the young athlete. “I feel proud of myself,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to getting closer with the team and learning new things throughout the experience.”

Reflecting on Anna’s selection, Strathallan’s Director of Hockey Gill Green said: “I am absolutely delighted for Anna and incredibly proud of her selection to the Scotland Emerging Squad. She’s a hardworking and committed player, and this is a fantastic opportunity for her to challenge herself on the international stage. I have no doubt she’ll embrace it with the same determination she shows on and off the pitch every day at Strathallan.” — Gill Green, Director of Hockey

Strathallan Prep School Launches New Enrichment Programme

Strathallan Prep School is pleased to announce the launch of Riley Roots, a new optional Saturday enrichment programme for pupils in Years 3 and 4, starting September 2025.

Delivered in two exciting blocks during the autumn term— Strathallan Stars (drama and musical theatre) and Eco Explorers (outdoor learning)—Riley Roots invites pupils to spend their Saturday mornings engaged in hands-on, joyful learning experiences that go beyond the classroom.

This marks a significant shift from the previous model of Saturday School. Instead, Riley Roots offers a fresh, flexible approach designed to spark curiosity, nurture creativity, and encourage exploration—without the expectation of mandatory attendance.

“We’re proud to introduce Riley Roots as a modern, meaningful alternative to Saturday School,” said Emma Lalani, Head of Strathallan Prep. “This change reflects our commitment to providing a balanced, enriching education that supports both learning and family time.” “We’re already planning exciting new blocks for the spring and summer terms”

Saturday sessions will now be entirely optional for Years 3 and 4, and there will continue to be no Saturday school for Years 1 and 2.

Strathallan Rugby Duo Go Stateside After Representing Scotland

As most pupils at Strathallan School prepare for the summer break, two Rugby Academy players are setting their sights further afield. Max E and Jack L will soon head to the United States on Division 1 rugby scholarships, following their recent selection for the Scotland Rugby League side in a fixture against England.

Before they depart, the pair will once again pull on the national jersey to face Wales in Grangemouth this weekend, a fitting end to their time at school.

Max, from Edinburgh, will join American International College (AIC) in Massachusetts this autumn, where he’ll study Sports & Recreational Management and compete in the Liberty Conference, playing against top US college teams including Ivy League sides.

“I honestly don’t think I’d have had these incredible opportunities without Strathallan,” he reflects. “Playing at Murrayfield, touring South Africa, the mindset I’ve developed here – it’s all been instrumental in helping me be seen and succeed on a global stage.”

Jack, from Dunfermline, will head to the University of Arizona in Tucson to study Business Management while playing for the Wildcats. A powerful front-rower, Jack’s recent debut in Rugby League was a nod to his family’s sporting roots.

“My dad played Rugby League, so it meant a lot to experience the game he loved,” said Jack. “When I visited Arizona, I knew it was the right fit—it’s an amazing place to study and play rugby.”

For Jack, the decision to head west was sealed during his visit to Arizona. “It’s just an amazing place, world-renowned,” he enthuses. “I’ll be studying, playing D1 rugby, and soaking in the heat. I simply can’t wait to get started.”

Although they’ll be on opposite coasts, both players could cross paths again in the competitive US college rugby system. “We’ll be playing in different time zones, but who knows – I reckon we’ll meet again down the line,” Jack joked.

“Max and Jack’s ability to seamlessly switch between Rugby League and Union speaks volumes about their talent and the strong foundation they’ve built here with the 1st XV,” said Andrew Henderson, Director of Strathallan Rugby Academy. “They’re both heading to America with immense potential, and we eagerly anticipate watching them flourish not just as players, but as individuals on this exciting new journey.”

Both scholarships were arranged through Elite Rugby Scholars, the world’s first US College Rugby consultancy service.

Piping a Tune for Toothless

From the sound of Scotland to the roar of the big screen, we are delighted to share that Mr Craig Muirhead, Director of Traditional Music and Scottish Culture, and Mr Kyle Howie, Piping Instructor, have had their piping featured in the new live-action How to Train Your Dragon!

Mr Muirhead said, “It’s very special to play a small part in a franchise that means so much to lots of people! It’s even more special to play with great musicians and friends. I saw the movie with family last week and there was lots of excitement, and at times I even felt emotional!”

The pair are also behind Piping Club, a growing global platform sharing top-quality piping content for enthusiasts around the world.

This is not the first time their musical talents have been heard on the big screen for DreamWorks Animation and it’s a proud moment for the school, with their success continuing to inspire the next generation of young musicians at Strathallan.

What a day to remember!

It was an absolute pleasure to welcome back our former pupils and their families for our inaugural Homecoming, especially those celebrating milestone anniversaries — from the Class of ’15, ’05, ’95, ’85, ’75, ’65 and earlier!

From Shooting Clays and a round of Golf on the Centenary Course, to an exquisite lunch in Harry’s, followed by a fantastic Cricket match to round off the day, it was a celebration filled with laughter, stories and reconnection. Thank you to everyone who returned to campus — your presence made this event truly special.

Here’s to the #StrathFamily, old memories and new ones made.

Royal Recognition for DJB

David Barnes, known fondly to many as DJB, received an invitation to attend Their Majesties’ Garden Party at Buckingham Palace this week, recognising his decades of dedication to education.

David was joined by his daughter Emily as they celebrated alongside fellow educators from across the UK in the sunshine.

Over a remarkable 42-year career at Strathallan, as a Deputy Head and Housemaster, David has shaped countless young lives across the globe. He was honoured with the prestigious Boarding Schools' Association's Stephen Winkley Award for lifetime service to education.

Emily told us, “It was such a special day at the King’s Garden Party for Education and Skills. So proud of you, Dad. What an incredible recognition for all you’ve achieved. The sun was shining as the King even walked past us!”

A proud day for the Barnes family and huge congratulations from all of us at Strathallan.

Strathallan School Pupils Secure Record GCSE Success for Third Year Running

Strathallan School pupils are celebrating another year of exceptional GCSE results, with more than half of all grades awarded at the top levels.

This summer marks the third consecutive year of rising success since the pandemic, with pupils once again excelling across a broad range of subjects. More than one in ten pupils secured the elite Grade 9 (A* equivalent), with 44% of the very top grades being 9–6 (A*–B equivalent).

Headmaster Mark Lauder said, “What makes me proud is not just the statistics but the character behind them. These results reflect pupils who have pushed themselves, supported one another, and balanced academic effort with sport, music, drama, and service. Strathallan’s strength has always been helping young people discover who they are and what they can achieve. Today’s results are another reminder of just how far that approach takes them.”

This GCSE triumph follows a remarkable season of exam success for Strathallan, with pupils also celebrating record-breaking Highers and Advanced Highers in Scotland and outstanding A-Level outcomes earlier this month.

Among those celebrating today is Alec P, a day pupil from Malta who joined Strathallan in Third Form. Alec said, “I am happy with my GCSE results and grateful for the support of my teachers. These results have further motivated me to pursue my ambition of studying medicine. I am excited to embark on my next steps at Strathallan’s Sixth Form, where I will be studying Physics, Chemistry, and Biology at A Level.”

Also celebrating a fantastic set results today was Rose C, who told us, “I was really pleased with my results this year, especially in French, which has taken a lot of practice, and also Art, as I had put a lot of time and care into my sketchbooks. I am incredibly excited to be taking A-Level Classics, History, Psychology, and Art this year, as I can’t wait to be studying what I most enjoy!”

Another pupil delighted with today’s results is Team GB’s Nordic Skier, Hamish B, who commented: “I’m really pleased with my results, but especially proud of my 8 in Art and Design, which I studied in Art Club and in my spare time. I’m so grateful to my art teachers for supporting me and making that possible. My goal is to study Engineering, then join the Army Royal Engineers, so strong Maths and Physics results were a nice confidence boost that I’m on the right path.”

“I’m now moving to A-Level Maths, Further Maths, Physics, and Design Technology. GCSEs meant that my cross-country ski training had to take a back seat this year, so I’m looking forward to my first FIS race season this winter with no immediate exams on the horizon!”

Strathallan celebrates record-breaking Higher and Advanced Higher results

Strathallan School is celebrating another year of academic excellence as pupils achieved record breaking results across Higher and Advanced Higher qualifications, reaffirming the school’s position as one of Scotland’s top performing independent schools.

In this year’s SQA examinations, 83.2% of all Higher grades awarded were A-C, 70% A-B, with an even more impressive 88.3% A-C rate at Advanced Higher, with 75% being A-B grades, and 57% of grades achieving As. Notably, every pupil sitting Advanced Higher Chemistry, Economics, Physics and Music achieved an A grade, highlighting Strathallan’s exceptional teaching and commitment to academic rigour.

As a broadly non-selective school, Strathallan continues to outperform national averages, offering an expansive curriculum that spans GCSE’s, Highers, Advanced Highers and A levels, the broadest curriculum offering in Scotland.

Headmaster Mark Lauder praised the achievements saying:

“These results are a testament to the dedication of our pupils and the tireless support of our staff. To see such outstanding outcomes across a wide ability range, in both STEM the Arts and Humanties, alongside such strength in sport and the cocurriculum is what makes Strathallan truly unique.”

Among the standout achievers this year are Captains of School Eve Bergin and Fergus Thompson, who each added a full suite of Advanced Higher A grades to their previous clean sweep at Higher. Eve will take up her place at St Andrew’s University, while Fergus is set to join Strathclyde University.

Fergus Thompson was delighted with his results and said:

“I’m very happy with my Advanced Higher results, three As. Huge thanks to all of my teachers for getting me over the line and to Mrs MacBain for the words of encouragement along the way, to Mr Kalman and Dr Mitchell for explaining quantum physics, and to Mrs Pfupajena for never letting me settle for ‘good enough’ in maths. I’m looking forward to starting at Strathclyde in September with their rugby pre-season starting in a couple of weeks. From Strath to Strath!”

Reflecting on her success, Eve Bergin said:

“I’m absolutely delighted with the results I received this morning and so relieved that all the hard work has paid off. I want to say a massive thank you to my teachers for their unwavering support and guidance — I truly couldn’t have done it without them. I’m now looking forward to starting a new chapter studying International Relations at the University of St Andrews next year.”

Another exceptional performance came from Captain of Music, Eleanor Robb who balanced her academic workload with a significant commitment to music. Eleanor achieved straight A grades at both Higher and Advanced Higher and will now pursue her passion for music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Speaking about her Strathallan journey, Eleanor said

“I was really pleased with my results, achieving three As at Advanced Higher. The school has supported me in developing my musical skills and gaining a place at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, all while helping me maintain a high standard in my academic work”.

Commenting on the school’s success, Deputy Head Academic, Mr Andrew Watt added:

“Our pupils continue to show that academic excellence can be achieved alongside sporting, cultural, and leadership opportunities. These results are not only a reflection of their talent, but also their discipline, resilience and ambition.”

As pupils look ahead to their futures in Scotland, across the UK and internationally, Strathallan continues to set the standard for a holistic education rooted in academic success, opportunity, and character development.

Top grades and first-choice offers for Strathallan’s A-level Class of 2025

Hot on the heels of our record-breaking Higher and Advanced Higher results, Strathallan School is celebrating another year of exceptional A-level success, with more pupils than ever achieving top grades and securing places at their first-choice universities.

This year’s A-level cohort achieved a 100% pass rate*, with 17% of all grades awarded at A* – a new school record. More than a third of candidates achieved at least one A*, while over half (52%) secured at least one A* or A grade, and over a third (35%) of all grades awarded were A*–A.

With 62% of all grades at A*–B, 90% at A*–C was a new record too as was the impressive 100% pass rate. University progression is also at an all-time high – 89% of leavers gained a place on their first-choice course and 97% secured either their first choice or insurance offer. Pupils will now go on to study a wide range of subjects at leading institutions including the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, University of Warwick, Durham University, Mountview, the University of Edinburgh, St Andrew’s University and the University of Arizona.

Among the top performers was Cadet RSM Charlie Marjoribanks, who achieved four A*s in Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and will go on to study Biochemistry at the University of St Andrews. Charlie said, “I am very happy with my results and I am looking forward to studying Biochemistry at St Andrews. I am grateful for all the amazing and interesting lessons and support from my teachers.”

Another pupil celebrating outstanding results was Ellie Barrowman, who will take up a place at Newcastle University to study Biomedical Science, with plans to go on to Dentistry.

Ellie said, “I was so happy receiving my results today after two years of hard work and dedication. I’m incredibly grateful for the support I’ve received from my school and teachers, whose guidance has helped me achieve these grades and secure an offer from Newcastle to study Biomedical Science. I’m excited to begin this new chapter before pursuing my ultimate goal of studying Dentistry. Thank you to all my teachers for their constant encouragement and support.”

Headmaster Mark Lauder said, “It has been an extraordinary fortnight for academic achievement at Strathallan. Following last week’s record-breaking Scottish Qualifications results, today’s A-level outcomes confirm that our pupils continue to perform at the very highest level across the board.”

“These achievements are the product of hard work, resilience, and the exceptional teaching that characterises our school. I am immensely proud of every one of our leavers, and of all our pupils – including those awaiting their GCSE results next week – who have worked so hard this year. They now head off to pursue an exciting range of courses and careers, confident in the knowledge that they have already achieved something remarkable.”

Strathallan at Scone Palace International Horse Trials

We’re proud to share that Strathallan has a special place on the course at the inaugural Scone International Horse Trials, with one of the jumps named after the school.

This unique honour comes thanks to the incredible connection of former pupils Alec and Hugh Lochore – both Strathallan alumni who have gone on to make their mark in the equestrian world.

Alec, Event Director and Olympic Cross-Country Course Designer, and Hugh, a commentator at the trials, were once guided at school by familiar faces including Charlie Court, Brian Raine, Paul Vallot and David Gillies.

Brewing Up New Skills at Strath with BLEND

Vice-Captain of School, Constantin B, swapped his conductor’s baton for a barista’s apron at our Art Café. Under the expert guidance of Blend’s very own Beth, he explored the world of lattes.

“It was quite fun actually,” he said. “I learned about the different types of drink and how to make the perfect milk. My latte art still needs some improving, right now I’d class it as modern art.”

Beth noted that after learning the basics, Constantin offered to help out the very next day, providing invaluable support during a busy period. He quickly mastered the gift of the gab while making drinks for his fellow pupils and the community.

Since its opening, the Art Café has provided enterprising leavers with hands-on experience and tangible skills, preparing them for their next chapter.

Constantin’s journey at Strathallan has been far more extensive than originally planned. He initially joined the school for just a term or two, focusing on piping, but has since stayed for several years, fully embracing every opportunity the school has offered. His experiences have been incredibly diverse, ranging from competing at the British Pipe Band Championships and performing on stage as Dracula, to playing alongside Skerryvore and even learning to conduct an orchestra.

“When I came for the tour, I just knew it was the right place because of the people here. I’ve had so many opportunities to try things I’ve never done before. The support I’ve received has really helped me build the confidence to give it all a go.”

The Buzz in Harry’s

There was a real buzz in Harry’s this week as our bee-rilliant Sodexo Catering team hosted a special workshop to celebrate World Bee Day, building on the momentum from Earth Day.

With help from the Perth & Kinross Beekeepers’ Association, our Year 3–6 pupils got the chance to explore the world of bees and they were excited!

Here are just a few of the un-bee-lievable facts they learned: There are 275 species of bees in Scotland

Dumbledore is the Old English word for bee

A single colony could fly up to 88,000km just to make one jar of honey!

A huge thank you to our guests for delivering such an engaging session. Our pupils left with a deeper appreciation of these tiny pollinators and their mighty impact on our planet.

the University of St Andrews, with aspirations to work

Cheers to Christine!

We surprised one of our longest-serving members of staff with a very special 70th birthday celebration!

Joining Strathallan in 1990, Christine has been keeping the school moving forward for 35 years.

Known for her cheeky grin, brilliant humour, and unwavering dedication, she was celebrated by her colleagues in the Domestic Team, our Headmaster, and former staff who returned to say hello.

House spirit. Strath pride

A whole-school snapshot of an incredible year - one filled with community, challenge, and celebration.

Well done to the Class of 2025 and every House that made this year one to remember.

Onwards and upwards!

A huge well done to our Second Form as they wrap up their time in the Prep School. We’re so proud of everything you’ve achieved – and can’t wait to see all you’ll do next as you take your next steps after the holidays.

This August, they will be the very first to take part in our brand-new Third Form Programme - The Bigger Picture - and we can’t wait to see you lead the way.

Let the next chapter begin!

Academic

What Use is Chemistry?

Our Sixth Form chemists enjoyed an inspiring afternoon with John Blackie, author of What Use is Chemistry?, over tea and an informal Q&A session.

John’s book delves into the remarkable chemistry that underpins everyday life, technology, and modern society. During the session, he shared insights from his career as a chemical engineer and industry leader, offering pupils a first-hand look at the many exciting and varied opportunities available in the world of science.

Campus Field Sketching

First Form Geography class were out exploring campus, putting their field sketching skills to the test.

Berry Brilliant: Students Cook Up Sweet Success on Enterprise Day

One of the most anticipated days of the year, for pupils and judges alike, our Lower Sixth took part in an incredible jammaking challenge with a marketing and business twist.

In teams, pupils were tasked with creating a new concept for the Mackays preserve portfolio. From branding and mission statements to taste testing and final pitches, the day demanded creativity, collaboration, and culinary flair

A huge thank you to the Browns from Easter Grangemuir Farm for supplying the most gorgeous strawberries – the cornerstone of so many delicious creations on the day.

Winning Team – Fruit Prints

An environmentally focused business model for Mackays jam, utilising one reusable jar and lids with refillable jam pouches. A brilliant team effort, well thought-through and confidently presented.

Most Commercially Viable – Jamma Jam

A family-friendly fruit spread concept with low sugar, designed to support healthier diets. Smart, market-savvy, and timely.

Most Creative Idea – Crumb & Bear It

A jam and pastry joint venture allowing bakers to get creative or simply enjoy on toast. Imaginative and delightfully versatile!

The challenge proved that with a little teamwork and a few berries - brilliant ideas can grow in the most unexpected combinations.

Fieldwork that Flows

From riverbanks to city streets, our Geography Department took learning beyond the classroom this month. Fourth Form pupils headed out to investigate downstream changes along the River Farg, getting hands-on with fieldwork techniques.

Meanwhile, our Lower Sixth A Level students explored their Changing Places topic with an open-top bus tour and a visit to the V&A Dundee.

Bringing geography to life, one field trip at a time!

Bringing Science into Focus

Meet Jake Wilson, our talented Physics Technician, who’s been turning digital designs into tactile teaching tools. Using our 3D printer to create detailed models of nucleotides and enzymes, Jake has been helping students explore the complex structure of DNA in a way that’s hands-on, highimpact, and memorable. Science that sticks.

Quiz Champions!

A big well done to our talented young Geographers who took part in the SAGT Quiz at Perth Academy. Both Strathallan teams performed brilliantly in a tightly contested local heatand we’re thrilled to announce that Charlie C, George T and George M went on to win the Regional Final!

Struan R took 1st place in the Junior Solo Drumming

Rory M placed 3rd in Intermediate Piping and won Best Dressed in his category.

While the band just missed out on a prize, it was a strong showing all round - well done to everyone who took part!

Massive congratulations to our Pipers who competed at the European Pipe Band Championships in Perth. Calum B performed with the Grade 4A Vale of Atholl Pipe Band, winning their section.

Harry T and Mr Muirhead, playing with the Grade 1 Inveraray & District Pipe Band, were crowned Grade 1 European Champions.

Mr Craig Muirhead, Director of Scottish Culture and Traditional Music at Strathallan, said, “It’s such a high standard in Grade 1, so it’s just great to perform well, and put yourself in the mix for a prize. But it’s extra special to be read out as the winning band.”

Meanwhile, Rory M has been on outstanding form - taking four 1st places at the Tain Highland Games, and adding two 1sts and a 2nd at the Abernethy Highland Games.

Performing Arts

Fantastic Mr Fox

Before the magical and meteoric success of the Harry Potter novels, the most popular children’s author must surely have been Roald Dahl, with his appealing tales of good against evil and the triumph of the underdog.

But for the Prep School play in June, what was explored was rather the triumph of the “under-fox”! Dalhl’s 1970 story, “Fantastic Mr Fox”, was adapted for the stage, in 2001, by David Wood.

The tale tells of the unsuccessful attempts of the sinister, but hapless, trio of farmers, Boggis (Aksil S), Bunce (Zoe M) and Bean (Holly F) to get rid of the fox that is stealing food from their farms. Mr Fox was cunningly played by Charlie C, assisted by Mrs Fox, played in the different performances by Holly P and Georgie M. In fact, a number of the characters had double-casting, allowing as many of the pupils as possible .to get a chance to “tread the boards”.

Harris C-H as the author, Roald Dahl, introduced the play, an ensemble piece, that was performed with energy and enthusiasm by the entire cast. Voice projection was clear and expressive, both in the spoken words and in the singing of the entire cast. Thank you, Mrs Simon, Musical Director, and accompanist…..(?)

Director, Mrs Carr-Bates, created many beautiful group arrangements on the stage with all of the actors engaged with the action. This was enhanced by the excellent costumes and make-up. Well done, Kenna Troup, Freya P, Ailsa T and team. Thanks to the Props team, headed by Elin R. Particularly memorable were the chickens and the falling tree!

Strathallan Prep School is once again indebted to former student, Oliver Beetchen and former teacher, Jim Salisbury, for the amazing set design and construction. Stage manager, Natalie DCT, managed the efficient stage crew. Throughout the team were a large number of assistants in-training, ready to step up to more responsibility. This number included Assistant Director, Matthew F, who moved into Senior School from Prep just this year and who was highly praised by Mrs Carr-Bates for his efficiency and helpfulness.

Real-Life Heroes Visit Year 1 & 2

Our Year 1 and 2 pupils have been on an exciting journey exploring real-life heroes, and they recently had the thrilling opportunity to meet some incredible community champions.

The children welcomed Ashleigh and Ben from Kinross Police Station. As part of their “People Who Help Us” topic, the officers shared captivating stories about their daily roles. They emphasized the importance of teamwork, bravery, and keeping our communities safe.

Next, the class met First Responders from Perth. The responders demonstrated how they help people in emergencies. The children learned about the vital equipment in an ambulance and practiced making a 999 call calmly and safely.

The aspiring young heroes also took a special trip to our on-campus Health Centre. There, they met the school nurses and discovered how they care for pupils every day, from providing plasters and ice packs to handling more serious medical needs.

A huge thank you to Ashleigh and Ben, the First Responders, and our dedicated Health Centre team—true superheroes in our community!

To wrap up their project, the class received a truly heartwarming visit from Izzy from Socialising. Izzy is a professional singing teacher who runs mental health choirs across Fife.

Izzy, who is fully trained in British Sign Language (BSL), helped the Year 1 & 2 pupils learn to sign their class song. She even taught them a signed verse of ‘You Are My Sunshine’ ahead of their performance.

From community-building through music to championing inclusion, Izzy was the perfect final hero to inspire our young learners. She reminded us all that kindness, creativity, and connection can truly change lives.

A Play in a Day!

Our Year 5 & 6 Prep pupils took part in a Play in a Day workshop, where they learned and performed Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the expert guidance of our Head of Drama and Performing Arts, Mrs Carr-Bates and Mr Bates, who brought years of acting and teaching experience to the day. The pupils threw themselves into the challenge with enthusiasm and creativity, putting on a fantastic performance for families that evening.

Reading the Way

Our First Form pupils have been learning how to narrate with expression and bring characters to life using different voices. What better way to put their skills into practice and inspire a love of reading, than by sharing stories with our Year 1 & 2 pupils in the Scottish sunshine?

Strathallan Netball launches partnership with London Pulse

Strathallan School is proud to announce a new high-performance netball partnership with London Pulse, offering a first-ofits-kind opportunity in Scotland for players aged 14–18 (born between 2008–2012).

Through this partnership, players will benefit from elite weekly training sessions, strength and conditioning support, and the chance to compete in the London Pulse Player Development tournament — all delivered in a professional training environment.

Open trials will take place in the Wilson Hall at Strathallan School on Friday 15th August 2025, with an alternative date of Friday 29th August for those on holidays.

Successful players will be invited to take part in weekly Friday evening sessions:

6.30–7.30pm: Strength & Conditioning

7.30–9.00pm: Technical court training

The programme follows the London Pulse training curriculum and will be led by Strathallan’s Director of Netball, Louisa Walker. Players will also take part in the London Pulse Player Development tournament at the end of the 20-week training period.

London Pulse competes in the Netball Super League and runs a comprehensive pathway programme, including multiple performance squads and over 40 netball hubs across the south of the UK. The club is committed to expanding access to elite netball, particularly in areas without existing franchise pathways, and supports several international teams including Pakistan, St Vincent, and France. Notably, Pulse athletes include current Scottish Thistles Evie Watts and Charlotte Dunkley.

Strathallan’s Netball programme continues to go from strength to strength. In the 2024/25 season, the school reached the U15 Scottish Schools Cup final and the Senior Cup semi-final, with 12 players selected for the Perth & Kinross District squads. This new partnership will build on that success, helping more players realise their district and national ambitions.

Double Victory for Pebbles at South of Scotland Horse Trials It was a weekend to remember for Strathallan pupil Pebbles W, who achieved a rare double win at the South West of Scotland Horse Trials - taking first place in both the BE100 U18 and the BE90 Open.

Riding her two horses, Flight and Tino, Pebbles accomplished something she’s never done before, “Winning at South of Scotland was just amazing, but winning both the BE90 Open and the BE100 U18 on my two horses was even better! This is the first time I’ve ever had two BE wins on the same day in different classes, so it was a very successful weekend for me.”

She credits her success to the strong bond she shares with her horses, adding, “I’m very lucky to have two horses on top form, especially when it really matters.”

Looking ahead, Pebbles has her sights set on even bigger goals this summer including selection for the Scotland Eventing Team in the BE100 and BE90, and qualifying again for the prestigious Badminton Horse Trials.

Huge congratulations to our 1st Netball team who won the Perth and Kinross League for the first time since entering the competition – marking a historic moment for the sport at the School.

The 2024/2025 season came to a close with an emphatic 82–31 win over Cherrybank, capping off a season that saw Strathallan lose only one match across 17 fixtures.

Led by Captain Olivia F, the team showed determination and teamwork throughout the season.

Olivia said, “I’m so proud of everything the girls have achieved this year – it shows how our dedication and commitment to netball has paid off. When we first joined the Perth league, our results were nowhere near as strong.”

Director of Netball, Louisa W, praised the squad’s consistency and resilience, “Highlights of the season included an early 49–41 win against league contenders Kinross Stars – despite playing a cup fixture earlier that same day. A strong run of performances after the Christmas break, including confident wins over Perth Thistles and Cherrybank, allowed us to build momentum and give valuable court time to our younger players. Our 69–42 victory in the return match against Kinross showed just how far the team had developed across the year.”

Clays

In March, Strathallan’s clay pigeon shooting teams travelled to the Ian Coley Shooting Ground in Cheltenham to compete in the Independent Schools Clay Pigeon Shooting British Championships and returned with silverware.

The girls’ team, made up of Isla T, Lilly L, and Helen S, shot superbly to take first place, with Isla also claiming the High Gun award for top individual lady.

Reflecting on the event, Isla said, “Cheltenham was an amazing experience. Going up against some of the top schools was definitely challenging - they had some very talented teams - but we worked well together and supported each other.

Everyone shot extremely well, and the win was an amazing way to finish off Helen’s final term at Strathallan, especially as she only started shooting in September. It was also a brilliant way to close out our season, and we look forward to hopefully continuing to build the ladies’ shooting team and competing in more fixtures next year.”

Congratulations, ladies!

Awards

Celebrating Excellence!

Huge congratulations to all our senior students who received Colours, Trophies and Prizes in our final assembly of the school year - recognising outstanding accomplishments in Music, Drama, Sport, Model UN, Piping and Drumming, DofE, Debating and CCF.

From stage to sport, leadership to service, your achievements beyond the classroom are what make our Strathallan community shine.

CCF

CCF Cadets Take on Exercise Strike Out!

Our CCF Army and Royal Marine sections had an action-packed annual camp, “Exercise Strike Out,” at Barry Buddon Training Area from Monday, June 23rd!

Over two days and nights, our cadets honed their skills in fieldcraft, patrolling, ambushes, and both hasty and deliberate attacks. They even received fantastic support from 7 Scots, Royal Regiment of Scotland, who provided valuable tactics lessons and ran an exciting live firing range shoot on Wednesday!

The cadets were competing for the prestigious Tam Lindsay Shield, named in honour of Tam Lindsay, who dedicated 50 years to service with the Black Watch and as Strathallan School Staff Instructor. It was a close competition, but 1 Section, led by the brilliant Cadet Sgt Monty A., emerged as the well-deserved winners.

Strathallians

Duncan Scott OBE

Former pupil Duncan Scott received his OBE from His Majesty The King for services to swimming.

We’re delighted to see Duncan receive royal recognition for his dedication, excellence, and outstanding ambassadorship for the sport he loves .

A strong tie to the past

A moment to remember for our Captain of Cricket, Conor F, as he was presented with a Strathallan tie from a school tour to South Africa in the 1960s by former pupil Michael Dawson.

Conor, who told us he’s currently on a mission to earn every school tie possible, was honoured to receive the gift - a wonderful symbol of tradition, achievement, and the enduring bonds of the #StrathFamily
