The Bahamas gave it a gallant effort, but fell short 100-91 to Uruguay in their final game yesterday at the FIBA AmeriCup 2025 at the Poldeportive Alexis Arguello Arena in Managua, Nicaragua.
Team Bahamas opened play in Group A on Saturday, losing 105-93 in overtime to the United States of America. They suffered their second loss to Brazil in a 84-66 defeat on Sunday.
The two losses forced The Bahamas to have to rely on a victory against Uruguay in order to try and secure one of the three
remaining spots behind the top two finishers in each of the three groups to advance to the playoffs.
However, Uruguay was able to hold off The Bahamas down the stretch to fold the country’s bid to stay alive in the tournament, falling 0-3 in the round-robin.
Despite the losses, first year coach Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn said he’s very proud of the way the team competed in all three games in the tournament.
“All of our games were tough. We had a chance to win all of them, but we came up short,” Nairn said. “Our programme continues to grow and head in the right direction.”
With head coach Chris DeMarco, an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors in the NBA, not available, Nairn - a former player on the men’s teamwas given the nod to coach the team, a feat he said he will cherish.
“It was an honour to coach these guys and work with the coaching staff,” said Nairn, now the associate head coach at Bowling Green State University.
“This was one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done in my life. There is no need for us to hang our heads, the world is on notice about Bahamian basketball!.”

The backcourt duo of point guard Domnick Bridgewater and guard Franco Miller Jr put together another impressive 1-2 punch, but it wasn’t enough to prevail against
Uruguay. Bridgewater, who didn’t play in game two, returned to the starting line-up and finished with 29 points on 11-of-19 from the field, 4-of-10 from the three-point line and 3-for-5 from the free throw line.
He also had five assists and two steals. Miller Jr, one of the leading scorers in all three games, shot 8-for-15 from the field, 2-for-9 from behind the three-point line and 2-for-3 from the

Club added a new addition to its growing amenities with the official ribbon cutting of two state-of-the-art paddleball courts.
The opening ceremony was held at the Racquet Club at Baha Mar this past weekend.
Present at the ceremony were Derron Donaldson, director of the Racquet Club, Robert Sands, senior vice president of Baha Mar, and Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Mario Bowleg.
“Today’s ribbon cutting is not only about inaugurating two new courts but also about affirming Baha Mar’s commitment to innovation, accessibility, and excellence in sports and leisure,” said Donaldson.
Donaldson emphasised the accessibility of the new facilities, noting that courts are open to both guests of the resort and local Bahamian residents for rent at a residential rate and a resort rate.
Robert Sands spoke to the inclusion of the facilities at Baha Mar’s Racquet Club. “We are not an enclosed community, we
are an open community and we open all of our facilities both to our guests as well as to the Bahamians at large to allow them to participate in the various offerings that we have,” said Sands. Players can book the court for private matches and tournaments or pair their sessions with a professional coach available for hire, to learn the fundamentals of

NEW YORK (AP) — Ben Rice hit the longest homer of his career, Cody Bellinger had three RBIs and rookie Cam Schlittler worked six scoreless innings as the New York Yankees beat the Washington Nationals 10-5 Monday night.
Bellinger opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly off Brad Lord (4-7) in the first before Rice hit a 435foot homer to right in the third.
The Yankees chased Lord with a five-run outburst in the fifth when Aaron Judge hit an RBI double, Bellinger added a two-run single and Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm Jr hit a two-run homer.
The homer was Chisholm Jr’s third in two games and his career-high 25th. New York’s Jasson Domínguez hit a three-run homer — his first since July 23 — in the seventh.
Schlittler (2-2), who carried a perfect game into the seventh inning last Wednesday against Tampa Bay, allowed four hits and three walks with eight strikeouts in six innings. He has thrown 14 1/3 consecutive

WITH their mandate to revive the sport of softball in all of the Family Islands, the Bahamas Softball Federation will return to the once capital of softball in Eleuthera for their first Best-of-the-Best Modified Softball Tournament.
Scheduled for the weekend of September 25-28, in Palmetto Point, the BSF will pay honour to a pair of deceased softball legends from Eleuthera in versatile Van “Lil Joe” Johnson and veteran pitcher Reggie “The Juicer” Knowles for their contribution to softball.
BSF president Marvin ‘Togie’ Wood said as the governing body for softball in the country, they will introduce events such as these to the various islands in their quest to get softball up and running again.
“We want to jumpstart softball on the Family Islands. Hopefully we can get them excited on the islands once they can see the competition from New
Providence,” said Wood, who is serving the first year of his term as president. “This is a modified pitch, but it’s only the pitch that is different. We have a contingent going to Exuma this weekend as well to put on a pitching clinic there, so we want to try to get interest back in softball.”
The tournament is expected to attract at least four teams from New Providence and four from Eleuthera, along with one from Grand Bahama and another expected from Exuma.
The champions will take the trophy along with a $1,000 in cash prize with 15 cases of Ultra Michelob and 15 championship hats.
The runners-up will receive a trophy, $500 in cash and five cases of Ultra Michelob.
“We wanted to give out rings, but hopefully next year,” said Wood about the attractive prizes being offered. “Gone are the days where people were playing for trophies when you can get rings at affordable prices. We’re just trying to get the interest back. So we
want to allow the islands to understand that if you can play modified pitch, you can play fastpitch. “It’s just a difference in the speed of the ball. It’s the same form, not like slowpitch where the ball is thrown high in the air.”
Johnson, short in stature, played slowpitch, modified and fastpitch softball during his era both in Eleuthera and New Providence. He passed away on Thursday, February 8, at the age of 60.
Knowles, primarily a fastpitch pitcher in both Eleuthera and New Providence, was a long-time men’s national team player. He passed away on Thursday, August 1, 2024.
Wood said the federation is honoured to be able to show their appreciation to two former softball legends, who actually came from Eleuthera.
“Lil Joe actually played a modified pitch. In fact, he played slowpitch as well,” said Wood of Johnson, who was also a long-time member of the men’s national softball team.
“I don’t remember the Juicer playing modified
pitch, but the tournament is being held in Palmetto Point and he was a very significant figure in Palmetto Point, so we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to recognise him for his accomplishment in fastpitch.”
Wood noted that it’s not too late for teams who are interested in participating. They can contact him at 242-808-7281 or Brian “The Ninja” Neely at 242-553-0244.
While the BSF will be holding the modified pitch tournament in Eleuthera, a fast-pitch pitching clinic will be held at the same time in Exuma.
The Exuma Softball Association is scheduled to hold the clinic in George Town, Exuma, on Friday from 6-9pm and on Saturday from 10am to noon and 6-9pm.
Men’s pitchers Thomas Davis and Delano Cartwright and women’s pitchers Mary “Cruise’” Edgecombe-Sweeting and Narissa Lockhart, along with coach Desmond ‘Big Country’ Dean, will conduct the clinic.
The clinic is being sponsored by the BSF, the ESA, the Exuma Junior Baseball and the Exuma Sports Council and will be free of charge to all participants.
Interested persons are urged to call 242-457-0180 for more details.
Once they are done with the tournament and clinic, Wood said the BSF will be focusing on a conclave where they will be inviting every league and association which plays softball in one forum to discuss the future of the sport.
He also noted that next year, the BSF will be working in conjunction with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture for the staging of the Bahamas Games. Additionally, he noted that The Bahamas is also gearing up to host the ECAST Tournament for men and women with teams coming in from around the Caribbean. “We know that the government has been spending money on baseball on several tournaments, basketball, track and field, swimming and volleyball,” Wood said.
“We in softball want to get some of the money to flow our way again, so we are looking forward to hosting our tournaments with the financial support from the government.”

NEW YORK (AP) — The San Francisco Giants will host the New York Yankees to start Major League Baseball’s season on March 25, the earliest opening day other than international games. MLB said yesterday the other 28 teams open the following day, with Kansas City at Atlanta, Minnesota at Baltimore, Washington at the Chicago Cubs, Boston at Cincinnati, the Los Angeles Angels at Houston, Arizona at the Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado at Miami. the Chicago White Sox at Milwaukee, Pittsburgh at the New York Mets, Texas at Philadelphia, Tampa Bay at St. Louis, Detroit at San Diego, Cleveland at Seattle and the Athletics at Toronto. San Francisco started the 2023 season at the Yankees. Other than international games, the previous earliest openers were this year on March 27. Five games are scheduled for March 27 next season and all 30 teams are to play the following day. The final day of the regular season is scheduled for September 27, the earliest since 2020. In their second of three seasons playing most home games in West Sacramento, California, the Athletics will host consecutive threegame series at the Triple-A Las Vegas Ballpark against Milwaukee and Colorado from June 8-14. The A’s, who played in Oakland from 1968-24, hope to move into a new
Las Vegas stadium in 2028. Plans are not yet finalised for a Phillies-Twins game at Dyersville, Iowa, during August 13-16 and for a two-game Padres-Diamondbacks series at Mexico City on April 25-26. The Field of Dreams, site of the 1989 movie, hosted the Yankees and White Sox in 2021, and the Cubs and Reds the following year before closing for renovations. A contemplated YankeesBlue Jays series at London in June likely won’t take place because of scheduling issues caused by West Ham being home for its Premier League final match on May 24, delaying when Olympic Stadium would be available for conversion to baseball. While regular-season games
were to be played in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in September 2025 and 2026, according to the collective bargaining agreement, none were scheduled for this season and none have been announced for next year.
MLB scheduled a rivalry weekend for May 17-19, featuring Dodgers at Angels, Boston at Atlanta, Cincinnati at Cleveland, San Francisco at Athletics, Yankees at Mets, Milwaukee at Minnesota, Kansas City at St. Louis, San Diego at Seattle, Miami at Tampa Bay, Baltimore at Washington and Cubs at White Sox. Other regional matchups that weekend include Arizona at Colorado, Toronto at Detroit, Texas at Houston and Philadelphia at Pittsburgh.
Matchups are the same as May 16-18 this year, with home teams reversed. The All-Star Game, announced in 2019 for Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park to mark the 250th anniversary year of the Declaration of Independence, is slated to be played July 14. Off days were built into the schedule to accommodate World Cup matches at stadiums that share parking lots: on June 17 and July 3 at Arlington, Texas; June 20 and July 3 at Kansas City, Missouri; and June 19 and July 1 at Seattle. Because of the off day, the Mariners will host the Red Sox in a doubleheader on June 20. The Yankees and Mets will play in the Bronx from September 11-13, marking
the 25th anniversary of the terrorists attacks. They played at Citi Field to mark the 20th anniversary. In the fourth straight season of a balanced schedule, a team will play 13 games against each division rival and six or seven against each other club in its league for a total of 62. The remaining 48 games are against interleague opponents, with a single three-game series against each of the 14 other clubs in the opposite league. Teams will be home against the same interleague opponents they hosted in 2023.
The American League used a balanced schedule from 1977-2000 and the National League from 1993-2000.

NEW YORK (AP) —
Iga Swiatek is trying to do something no woman has done since Serena Williams in 2012: win the U.S. Open and Wimbledon in the same season.
Jannik Sinner is trying to do something no man has done since Roger Federer in 2008: repeat as U.S. Open champion.
By the looks of things yesterday in Arthur Ashe Stadium as the now-threeday first round wrapped up, the two players who triumphed at the All England Club last month — and who both served short doping-related bans last year — look ready to contend again in New York. And how. The second-seeded Swiatek was up first in the U.S. Open’s main arena and needed merely an hour to dismiss Emiliana Arango of Colombia 6-1, 6-2. No.
1 Sinner then took only 39 minutes more to finish off his 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic.
“Obviously, every year is different,” said Sinner, sporting the white arm sleeve he began wearing after hurting his elbow in a fall during Wimbledon.
“You come here starting this tournament, hopefully, the best possible way — which I did.”
He certainly showed no signs of the virus that forced him to quit in the first set of
the Cincinnati Open final against his biggest rival, No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, last week. Either Sinner or Alcaraz, who have combined to win the past seven major titles, can own the top ATP ranking after these 15 days. Similarly, Swiatek, Coco Gauff or No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, the defending champion, can leave New York atop the WTA. Yesterday, Sinner saved both break points he faced and won 33 of 40 first-serve points.
Swiatek was even more dominant, not only never facing a break point but
never even being taken to deuce in any of her eight service games, while accumulating a 26-5 edge in winners.
There was a time when some folks, perhaps swayed by Swiatek’s dominance on the French Open’s red clay, thought she couldn’t succeed on the speedier surfaces of hard and grass courts. That certainly was not the case, as her championships at Wimbledon in July and at the U.S. Open in 2022 make obvious.
Ten women have split the past 11 trophies in New York; only Naomi Osaka, in
2018 and 2020, won more than one in that span. And Williams, with three in a row from 2012 to 2014, was the last woman to leave as the champion in consecutive years.
As for the men, no one has collected two in a row at the U.S. Open since Federer’s five straight titles from 2004 to 2008, before he lost in the 2009 final to Juan Martin del Potro.
Sinner was asked why that might be.
“We are heading towards end of the season, so some players, they are tired. Some players, they are
feeling different. Many things can change. It’s also the last big trophy of the year. ... I always say that the future is unpredictable,” he said. “So I don’t know what’s going to happen this time.” What else happened at the US Open on Tuesday?
Seeded winners included No. 8 Amanda Anisimova, the Wimbledon runner-up to Swiatek; No. 18 Beatriz Haddad Maia and No. 27 Marta Kostyuk among the women, and No. 10 Lorenzo Musetti, No. 19 Francisco Cerundolo, No. 23 Alexander Bublik — who
eliminated 2014 champion Marin Cilic — and No. 27 Denis Shapovalov among the men. No. 3 Gauff, who won the 2023 U.S. Open, was due on court at night to play Ajla Tomljanovic, followed by No. 3 Alexander Zverev against Alejandro Tabilo. Who is scheduled to play Wednesday at Flushing Meadows?
Sabalenka, Alcaraz, 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic and 2024 U.S. Open runner-up Jessica Pegula are on the Day 4 schedule as the second round begins.

NEW YORK (AP)
— Venus Williams will compete in women’s doubles at the U.S. Open after receiving a wild-card entry with 2021 singles runnerup Leylah Fernandez yesterday.
The 45-year-old Williams is appearing at her first Grand Slam tournament in two years after making a comeback to pro tennis in July following 16 months away from the tour. She competed in mixed doubles
last week, then in singles on Monday night — both also via wild-card invitations from the U.S. Tennis Association. Williams exited in the first round each time, but was thrilled to be back out on court after dealing with injuries and illness. She had surgery for uterine fibroids last year, and spoke Monday following her three-set exit in singles against 11th-seeded Karolina Muchova about being relieved to be pain-free. “Oh, what did I prove to myself?” Williams
said, repeating part of a reporter’s question at her postmatch news conference.
“I think for me, getting back on the court was about giving myself a chance to play more healthy.
“When you play unhealthy, it’s in your mind. It’s not just how you feel. You get stuck in your mind, too. So it was nice to be freer.”
She was the oldest person to play singles at the U.S. Open since 1981, and the spectators loved every moment of it, greeting her with camera phones held
aloft, shouting “Let’s go, Venus!” during the match and ushering her off the Arthur Ashe Stadium court with a standing ovation. In addition to her seven Grand Slam singles trophies, Williams owns 14 major titles in women’s doubles, all with her younger sister, Serena, as her partner. Two of those came in New York, in 1999 and 2009. They last played together at the U.S. Open in 2022, the year Serena played her final singles match there.
Williams and Fernandez, a 22-year-old from Canada, will face the sixth-seeded pair of Lyudmyla Kichenok of Ukraine and Ellen Perez of Australia in the first round. Fernandez lost to Emma Raducanu in the U.S. Open singles final four years ago. Williams hadn’t played an official

NEW YORK (AP) — Luis Torrens hit a three-run homer and matched his career high with five RBIs as the New York Mets overcame an early three-run deficit and beat the Philadelphia Phillies 13-3 on Monday night in a matchup of the top teams in the NL East.
Mark Vientos snapped a 3-all tie with the first of his two RBI doubles down the right field line off Cristopher Sánchez (11-5). Vientos sparked a three-run fourth with another RBI double down the left field line.
Torrens drove in five runs for the second time in his career and first since Aug. 14, 2021 for Seattle. He hit an RBI double for a 5-3 lead in the sixth and homered in the seventh off Jordan Romano to push New York’s lead to 10-3 before lining a single for New York’s final run in the eighth.
Jeff McNeil drove in three runs with a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly as the Mets won for the sixth time in nine games and moved within six games of the division-leading Phillies.
Brandon Nimmo and Juan Soto added RBI singles and Tyrone Taylor had three hits, including a runscoring single, as the Mets went 11 for 19 with runners in scoring position.
Trea Turner hit a leadoff triple and scored on a ground ball by Kyle Schwarber in the first inning. Alec Bohm hit a two-run single in the third off Senga to give the Phillies an early three-run lead.
Bohm also prompted about a 10-minute delay in the fifth when he complained about the presence of a parabolic microphone in center field after grounding into a double play.
Senga allowed three runs and six hits in four-plus innings.
Sánchez allowed season highs of six runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings, his shortest outing since May 24.
MARLINS 2, BRAVES 1
MIAMI (AP) — Edward Cabrera struck out 10 in seven scoreless innings, and Miami beat Atlanta.
Troy Johnston hit an RBI double and Máximo Acosta homered for the Marlins, who matched their win total from last year with their 62nd victory.
Cabrera (7-7) allowed one hit and walked two. The right-hander lost his previous two starts, yielding nine earned runs and 18 hits in 9 2/3 innings.
Rookie Drake Baldwin hit his 14th homer for Atlanta with two down in the ninth. But Calvin Faucher earned his 12th save when Ozzie Albies grounded out to third.
Miami jumped in front in the fifth against Spencer Strider (5-12). Otto López drew a leadoff walk and stole second before Johnston hit a drive that bounced off the warning track in right-center field. Strider surrendered three hits in seven innings. He struck out three and walked two.
RED SOX 4, ORIOLES 3
BALTIMORE (AP) — Jarren Duran hit a
three-run homer off Tomoyuki Sugano and Roman Anthony contributed a solo shot to help Boston beat Baltimore.
Duran’s 13th homer erased a two-run deficit in the fifth inning and propelled the second-place Red Sox to their fourth win in five games.
Sugano (10-6) gave up four runs and six hits in six innings to absorb his first loss in eight starts since July 2. Six days earlier, the 35-year-old rookie from Japan held Boston without an earned run over five innings in a Baltimore victory.
After Anthony hit the first leadoff homer of his career, Baltimore’s Colton Cowser smacked a solo homer in the second inning and added a two-run single in the third.
Duran connected after singles by Connor Wong and Anthony, and the onerun lead held up.
Boston’s Richard Fitts (2-4) gave up three runs in four innings before leaving with right biceps tightness. Garrett Whitlock struck out the side in the eighth after Gunnar Henderson hit a leadoff double, and Aroldis Chapman worked a perfect ninth for his 25th save in 27 tries.
BLUE JAYS 10, TWINS 4
TORONTO (AP) — Max Scherzer pitched six innings and won his third straight start, Alejandro Kirk and Andrés Giménez homered and Toronto beat Minnesota.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. added a two-run single as the AL East-leading Blue Jays won for the 30th time in 39 home games.
Scherzer (5-2) allowed four runs and four hits, including two home runs. He struck out five and walked one.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner is 10-2 in 19 career starts against the Twins.
Minnesota’s Matt Wallner homered twice off Scherzer, his 18th and 19th, but the Twins lost for the sixth time in seven games.
Twins starter Joe Ryan gave up four runs and four hits in a shaky first inning.
