Chill Out

Hot choices of cooling fabrics will get you through the dog days of summer. Cotton lawns & gauze, linens, challis, chiffons, and more!

Chill Collection

Scorching heat. Rolling power outages. How’s a person supposed to keep cool when the air conditioning doesn’t work? We look to ancient desert cities for inspiration on how to chill out during heat waves. The power of observation served desert dwellers well, inspiring the incorporation of clever shading and cooling practices. As American architects built up the middle-class homes in the 20th century with conveniences like central air and heat, the structures got away from the simple design elements that helped heat or cool a house in the prior century....or prior millennia. Victorian homes had transom windows above doorways to allow greater airflow through a house while keeping the bedroom doors closed for privacy. Basements were buried farther down under the earth’s surface, taking advantage of the cooler temps for root cellars, wine cellars, and larders. Buildings throughout Greece and Israel are bright white, reflecting the sun’s heat. Ancient peoples in the desert areas of the Middle East, Western China, and Northern India used their observations of the natural world to employ thermodynamics in cooling homes and palaces, long before they understood the actual science behind it.

July into August continue to bring us heat waves, so let’s combat the scalding temps with cooling fabrics that can get a little wet. Chill Snow combines linen and cotton in a lightweight, light-reflecting textile that will retain its crispness when dry cleaned, but we prefer its softer, laundered-linen appearance when washed. The same thing goes for our Chill Branches linen and rayon blend print. Pre-wash these in hot water and hot dryer to shrink them down and soften them up, then get busy sewing a loose-fitting top and pull-on pants, or a sun dress and overblouse, or a cap-sleeve top and shorts. Sew many options.

The pink and white print looks cute with Chill Jade, a single-weight cotton gauze that people often refer to as “baby muslin.” We chose this to be worn as a breezy peasant blouse or loose top.

From Telio in Canada comes Chill River, a lightweight ITY knit that begs to be worn as a halter top, short dress, or a flowing skirt.

Chill Clouds and Chill Ripples are matchmates you can piece together into a fun top. Don’t they look like pinched ribbons on a sheer base? At 63” wide, and with all-way stretch, you can easily play around with layout options. Why not have the ribbons run lengthwise down one panel and crosswise on another? Have some fun and get creative.

Chill Flora combines this collection’s white, pink, and aqua colors in a vibrant and soft rayon challis. A simple sundress to wear to the beach is in order! Or make a short-sleeved tunic to wear with Yoga Pants stitched from Chill Eastwick, a 66” wide, medium-weight cotton jersey knit. It’s also an ideal choice for a high-end T-shirt - we have beads and buttons if you want to decorate the neckline.

It’s not summer without our Beachcomber reversible cotton gauze fabrics. Chill Beachy features a pink, white, aqua, lilac, and mango plaid on one side, and a pink and white stripe on the other. These are two separate fabrics that have been stitched together. If you think it’s soft now, just wait until you wash it a couple of times - delicious!!! Sew an oversized, button-down shirt with rolled sleeves to let the reverse show. Or have fun with a handkerchief-hem skirt and pin back the points to let the reverse show, like an origami effect. Several more options are on our website.

From the hot regions of India come a couple of prints that are made for looking cool and staying cool. Chill Primo and Chill Secondo feature small, stepped diamond motifs in sand and taupe on either a dark aqua or deep pink base, respectively. These narrower fabrics can be cut across the grain, saving you money over conventional American layouts. To figure out your yardage, lay your pattern pieces out shoulder-toshoulder, then measure from the left to the right. This type of layout also makes it a lot easier to match designs, like matching plaids.

Chill Sandy is our top choice for a cool double-knit to make into leggings when you head off for a night of airconditioned movies and dinner. The color perfectly pairs with the sand color in the two cotton prints.

Build Collection

Hobbits had the right idea - build small homes in the sides of hills, cozy and cool, protected from the elements, enjoying a fairly temperature-controlled environment. Imagine yourself in an Italian grotto, dimly lit, underground, cool. Inspired by caves, these structures were purposefully built to keep food, wine, and people more comfortable during the heat of the day. French wine cellars and English root cellars also utilized the lower temperature of the subterranean to chill out. As early as 6000 years ago, the Sumerians in Mesopotamia built thickwalled adobe rowhouses on narrow streets. By adjoining the dwellings, they eliminated surface area for the sun to scorch, while keeping the streets shaded. In the late medieval and early Renaissance, ponds and fountains decorated open-air courtyards in the center of multi-family buildings, palaces, and palazzos, often encompassed by porticos. These shady spots provided respite from the midday sun, while evaporation of the water kept the ambiant temperature down. A lovely cross-breeze was enjoyed by those who had street-level walkthroughs on multiple sides. High roofs allowed heat to rise, thick walls prevented the heat of the sun from penetrating too deeply into the apartments, and small open windows were strategically placed to welcome breezes while keeping out the sun’s rays. In areas that could support vegetative growth, trees were oriented to shade homes, or vines climbed and cooled the sunny side of a structure.

The Transition catalog helps you take your wardrobe from the end of summer into autumn, and this collection will help you build a wardrobe with lightweight fabrics in dramatic colors on dark backgrounds that you can wear for months to come. Begin with Build Bouquet, a floral DTY knit in bright colors. The print is dressy enough for office casual attire, and casual enough for running errands with style. We looked for the perfect French denim to sew into shorts and a jacket, and present you with Build Indigo. Soft and dramatic with comfortable stretch - you will surely want to get extra to make pants, a shirtdress, and a long skirt with dramatic back slit. We love it as the short version of Closet Core’s

Jenny Overalls, with the Cielo top sewn from Build Meadow. Take a close look at this chiffon - bright yellow, pink, red, blue, white, and green flowers are strewn on a dark navy sheer base with satin dots adding an additional pop to the colors.

From Chicago fashion designer Andria Lieu comes Build Chic, a colorful stretch lace with scalloped borders on both sides. Although there is all-way stretch, the greater stretch runs lengthwise, which is what you want in a fabric if you are using the scallops as hems. To make the colors POP, we chose Build Jet from our stock collection of Rayon Jersey Knits. Use this as an underlining or sew it into a slip dress, tank, or bandeau. Check out the full range of colors on our site and in our retail store.

We noticed several ready-to-wear companies showcasing border prints in fantastic design layouts. Presenting Bâdgir Beachy, our second Beachcomber reversible cotton gauze in this issue. Brightly colored with orange and yellow, accented by dark plum, aqua, and white on the plaid side, and a simple orange and white stripe on the other. You choose which is the face and which is the reverse - there is no wrong answer here. We can’t help but imagine it sewn into an oversized top, billowing above sunshine yellow knit shorts crafted from Bâdgir Eastwick. A little goes a long way with this 65” wide, medium-weight cotton knit. Not your vibe? No worries. Make a knit top and wear a Beechy gauze skirt.

Doesn’t Grainline Studio’s Alder Shirtdress look super cute in Bâdgir Flora? Wear it on its own when the temps soar, and then toss on leggings or a knee length knit skirt when autumn cools things down. It’s all how you style it!

Bâdgir Collection

Ancient Egyptians were the first to build malqaf - towers on their buildings that captured and funneled winds down into their structures. But the Persians of ancient Iran improved on this concept so much, not only is this architectural and engineering style still used, but it was recently added to the visitor center of Zion National Park in Utah for off-grid air conditioning. The Persian tower, called a bâdgir (sounds like badger), features tall, open slots oriented to capture the prevailing winds. A partition in the middle of the bâdgir redirects the air downward into the building, where it might pass over a water feature called a qanat for additional cooling. The force of the downdraft pushes the warm air up and out the other side of the tower. The historical city of Yazd is full of iconic bâdgirs, one of the prime considerations for the city’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017. This style of architecture spread across the region, as seen in the barjeels of Qatar and Bahrain, and the mungh of Pakistan. Variations of the bâdgir were built throughout the UK in the late 20th century, including supermarkets in Manchester and the Royal Chelsea Hospital in London.

How to Care For Your Fabrics

The care instructions in this catalog are a conservative path, but not an absolute. There is no one size fits all for fabric care because of all the variables, such as hard versus soft water, well and septic versus municipal water, washers with and without a center aggitator, dryers that have a no-heat option, etc.

One supplier would have everyone dry clean every fabric, but for many of you this is not feasable.

Here are some general guides. You can always use your swatch to test how a fabric will react to washing and drying. Test wash the way you plan to wash your finished garments - this will remove any sizing and shrinkage prior to cutting/sewing.

Pro-Tip: Set your washer for an extra long spin cycle to remove excess water, then toss in the dryer on low heat for 5 minutes before hanging or laying flat. This minimizes wrinkles, and helps fibers last longer.

This all-purpose knit wears well as a structured top, princess-seamed dress, cardigan sweater set, FitNice Lady Legs, and so much more. The color is slightly lighter than the plum accent in Bâdgir Isabel, but it still looks great as a companion piece. Bâdgir Tucson and Bâdgir Stamps came to us as deadstock from a fashion house. They were both listed as linen blends. We believe Bâdgir Tucson is mostly cotton or rayon, some linen, and a tiny bit of polyester. Bâdgir Stamps has more linen mixed with some rayon. They look great together as fashion separates. Make a couple of different pieces in both, and then mix and match them for more wardrobe options. This is a helpful hack when traveling. Bâdgir Blanca provides you with a bright white option to wear as a blouse, not just with this group, but as a wardrobe staple. Jaali Collection

Open your mouth wide and breathe on the back of your hand. Now, purse your lips and blow on the back of your hand. Do you feel how much cooler your breath has become? That’s called the Venturi effect. But hundreds of years before Giovanni Battista Venturi put scientific gravitas behind this principle, homes throughout India cooled down with breeze blocks called jaali. You’ve seen movies and TV shows where deep-set windows have beautiful, thick stone screens instead of glass, constructed in repeating shapes like stars, circles, or ogees (like the image on our cover). The sun can’t blast heat through the deep trellis-like structures, and the warm wind decreased in temperature when passing through the narrow openings. The Islamic world uses a similar technique to enclose open-air balconies using intricate carved screens called mashrabiyas. The next time you see photos of the Taj Mahal, look for all the intricate jaalis. These designs were reserved for the rich and powerful. Today, it’s easy to find breeze blocks, as well as the molds to make your own, for enclosing a patio. The lesser fortunate wove reed mats to hang in windows and doorways, blocking sunlight. A looser weave could allow some breeze to pass through, and dunking the mat in water allowed for evaporative cooling in the dry air.

Embrace the stretch of the knit lace by lining it with Jaali Style, and then tailor a linen jacket to toss on when the air conditioning is blasting.

We pulled Jaali Style from our Techno Scuba Crepe Collection because the color is perfect for this story, and the weight is optimal for all manner of fashion separates. This washable and wrinkle-resistant fabric travels well and looks great all day at the office. Pair it with Jaali Swirls koshibo print for a smart ensemble. This print features jade as the dominant color, accented by muted indigo, mottled grey, and black.

Skywell Collection

China has always been one of the most technologically advanced civilizations in recorded history. Ancient Chinese courtyard houses featured a skywell, or tian-jing, that harnessed passive cooling techniques. Sustainable living writer Nathan Machoka described the three-fold effect of skywells in his article for the Chinese lifestyle site Nspirement: “The primary purposes of a skywell are to allow light, improve ventilation, and harvest rainwater.” Narrow, open-air courtyards lie hidden from direct sunlight, shaded by the surrounding buildings. Similar to the Persian bâdgir, cool air is drawn down into the skywell which forces the warmer air up and out of the structure. When the winds stopped and outside air became stagnant, buildings with skywells maintained circulation through cooler air falling to the ground level, pushing warmer air up and out through skylights and flues in chimneys. Ancient people observed that cold air falls to lower levels and hot air rises, even if they did not know the principles of mass and thermodynamics. Beautiful pools further cooled the air another 5-10 degrees on average, while increasing humidity in arid regions. Skywells are making a big comeback in modern Chinese architecture, partly inspired by the governmental directive requiring 70% of new constructions to be eco-friendly and meet “green” standards.

This muted color story of taupe and mauve sets you up beautifully with late summer into early fall wardrobe options. Choose Skywell Taupe rayon jersey knit as a sumptuous base, like Liesl’s Strasburg Henley bodysuit or knit top. Then toss on a skirt or slim-fit pants tailored from Skywell Euro twotone linen. If you sew Dana Marie’s Essential French Jacket, cut a 3” strip to use as an accent on the cuffs and pocketsfind the center, stitch it down ½” to the left and to the right of center, then pull threads from the outside to create a fringe (You won’t be able to pull beyond the stitch lines).

Stun your friends when you go out for dinner wearing a chic dress styled from Skywell Aix. The muted, blended background and stylized, soft flowers look inspired by French Impressionist painters, like Paul Cézanne from Aix-en-Provence.

Roman Collection

Ancient Romans made incredible advancements in architecture and infrastructure, which continue to inspire us. During dies caniculae (the dog days of summer), Romans woke early to get their work and errands done in the cool morning air. Once the midday sun was blazing, work stopped, and it was time to hop over to the frigidarium, a public pool chilled by snow or ice from nearby mountains. Sometimes, just putting cold water on your neck and wrists can lower your body temperature a bit. Wealthy families utilized radiant cooling techniques, building pipes into the walls through which cold water flowed, cooling the walls of the interior rooms. Shaded atriums with shallow rainwater collection pools called impluvium further chilled posh dwellings through shade and evaporation. Aqueducts pumped cold subterranean water to fountains, pools, and baths. Inspired by the shaded temps in caves, Romans built grottos under their homes and businesses, in which they stored wine and food. Who doesn’t love a chilled drink and snack during their midday siesta? Many structures featured porticoes, covered porches, and walkways that allowed people to be outside in the breeze, shaded from the sun. We hope you are chilling out in a breezy, shaded space while flipping through the pages of our Transition 2025 catalog.
