Newmarket Racecard - Saturday 11th October

Page 1

WELCOME TO

AwarmwelcometotheRowleyMileforDubaiFutureChampionsSaturday, the second day of our landmark autumn festival here at Newmarket.

We are extremely grateful to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Godolphin for their generous and enduring support of this weekend’s celebrations.

Today’s card features four Group races, highlighted by one of Britain’s most revered contests for juvenile horses, the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes This race has long been a proving ground for future Classic champions, with past winners including Frankel, St Mark’s Basilica and City Of Troy who made a memorable Group One debut here in 2024

Beyond the racing, we invite you to enjoy the wide range of food and drink available across the course. Take part in Darts with the Stars featuring Keith Deller and Colin Lloyd or test your skills on the minigolf course and golf simulator. Entertainment continues throughout the day with live performances from saxophonist Jackson Bulter as well as the Roaming Stars and the Snap Chaps. Be sure to stick around for the after party as James Riley returns to the Rowley Mile for an electric 75-minute set.

We are also delighted to welcome Godolphin’s exclusive pop-up shop on the Boulevard this weekend, where racegoers can purchase merchandise and more For further details, please refer to the course map in this racecard.

An RoR parade will take place at 12 noon in the pre-parade ring, showcasing the remarkable versatility of former racehorses through the work of Retraining of Racehorses and the Godolphin Rehoming Scheme. Among the participants is Blair House, ambassador for the Godolphin Lifetime Care programme. Racegoers can also meet one of the participants, African Jazz, on the Hyperion Lawn during the first two races.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the European Breeders Fund for their valued contribution throughout the season and to Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai for their generous support of our outstanding Owners & Trainers facility here at the Rowley Mile.

There are three more days to look forward to on the Rowley Mile in 2025 with TwoYear-Old Day on Wednesday 22nd October followed by our Final Meeting on Friday 31st October and Saturday 1st November Each promises highquality racing and the chance to see the sport’s future stars in action.

On behalf of everyone here, I wish you a most enjoyable afternoon and the very best of luck to all horses and their connections.

As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2025 season. Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world Mile Rowley The appreciate and assemble and The July Course.

As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.

I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2025 season, the very best of luck.

Have a wonderful day at the races today.

NEWMARKET RACECOURSE GROUNDSTAFF NAMED FLAT COURSE WINNERS AT RCA GROUNDSTAFF AWARDS

Newmarket Racecourse’s dedicated Grounds Team has been named Flat Course Winners at this year’s Racecourse Association (RCA) Groundstaff Awards

The accolade is recognition of their outstanding performance, innovation and commitment to delivering a first-class racing surface.

This achievement comes after a particularly challenging year, with an unprecedented and prolonged dry summer Despite these conditions, the team maintained safe going for every fixture across both of Newmarket’s racecourses.

Their work included the first major renovation of the July Course racing surface in 25 years, enhancing drainage, firmness and riding confidence; the use of wireless soil monitors to prepare the track for the Betfred Guineas Festival and upgrades to the July Course Winners Enclosure, improving both safety and accessibility

The Newmarket Grounds Team have devoted countless hours to keeping the track at its very best. Thanks to their dedication, the racecourse continues to provide a safe, highquality surface for racing and an exceptional experience for everyone both on and off the track.

This recognition underscores horseracing’s ongoing focus on innovation, high standards and equine welfare, with Grounds Teams at the heart of maintaining some of the country’s most iconic racetracks

RoR Parade

TODAY’S ROR PARADE

A parade of retired racehorses takes place in the paddock from 12.25pm to 12.45pm. The parade showcases the versatility of the thoroughbred together with the range of activities open to racehorses when they finish their racing careers, thanks to the work of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR).

The parade features several horses that found their new owners and vocation via the Godolphin Rehoming scheme.

Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. The charity’s four core roles and responsibilities can be summarised as follows, RoR:

• Creates a demand for former racehorses through opportunities to participate and compete in a range of equine disciplines and therapeutic activities.

• Educates owners and riders who take responsibility for former racehorses;

• Facilitates the transition to a second career for horses leaving racing; and

• Protects the welfare of former racehorses, in particular those in need of charitable support and care.

RoR annually stages over 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, showing, polo, eventing, show jumping, endurance, hunting and horseball.

1. AFRICAN JAZZ – ridden by Abi Sole

10-year-old gelding by Cape Cross, formerly trained by Charlie Appleby

Breeder: Godolphin

African Jazz (Jazz) ran eight times on the flat, winning twice, before he was retired from racing in 2019. Abi Sole acquired African Jazz through Godolphin Rehoming in October 2022, and the pair are currently competing in the RoR Showing Series and occasional Dressage competition. Jazz won both the Open Showing and Challenge classes at Suffolk Show this year, shortly after he was fourth at the Tattersalls RoR Open Ridden final at Hickstead.

Abi says: “Jazz is a dream to own and retrain. He is so kind and biddable, he really is a pleasure to ride and be around. He absolutely adores our son, and they are frequently found cuddling, as well as Jazz fondly licking his hair!”

2.

3. MAJOR PARTNERSHIP – ridden by

Laura Stokes

TNERSHIP

10-year-old gelding by lffraaj, formerly trained by Saeed bin Suroor

Breeder: Eyrefield Stud

NON-RUNNER

Major Partnership (known as Patrick) was a winner of £215k in prize money and joined the The British Racing School in January 2025. It is hard to believe he had ever been a racehorse; he has taken to his new job like a duck to water. Within a few weeks of joining the school he was teaching our most inexperienced riders the very basics of the rising trot and having their first canters. Patrick is a very laid-back character, and likes to do things as slowly as possible, usually his student is working harder to motivate him than he ever is himself Patrick likes to sleep, especially in his own droppings, meaning he also spends a lot of time being groomed and pampered by students

4. MISCHIEF MAGIC –

Stansfield

ridden by Sophie

5-year-old gelding by Exceed And Excel, formerly trained by

Charlie Appleby

Breeder: Godolphin

Mischief Magic, a six-time winner for Godolphin, posted victories in the UK, the US and the UAE. His G3 win at two earned him a trip to the Breeders’ Cup where he flew home to land the G1 Juvenile Turf Sprint. He also won the Listed Dubai Sprint at Meydan and retired from racing with earnings of well over £600,000. Mischief Magic moved to Godolphin’s rehoming yard earlier this year and has settled in beautifully, taking part in several ridden demonstrations for visitors He is already a firm favourite with the team there.

5 SCARF – ridden by Kirsty Warnes

18-year-old gelding by Lonhro, formerly trained by Saeed bin Suroor Breeder: Woodlands Stud

Scarf has had a varied life since retiring from racing with his owner Beverley Pooley. He has competed mainly as a show horse winning numerous championships, both ridden and In-hand. He was champion racehorse two years running at the East Anglia Horse Show, Tattersalls RoR Open Ridden winner Suffolk Show in 2023. He was crowned Equifest Ridden Retrained Racehorse Champion 2025. Scarf has also turned his

hoof to side-saddle, dressage and now formation riding. He has also started jumping which he loves Beverly says,“what he enjoys most of all is hacking and hanging out with his best mate Charlie a 12hh Welshie”

6. SAINT GREGOIRE – ridden by Louise Robson 14-year-old gelding by Le Havre, formerly trained by J-C Rouget and Saeed bin Suroor

Breeder: S A Franklin Finance

Saint Gregoire (Greg)was originally trained and raced in France, where we won six times over one mile, he came to Louise Robson via the Godolphin Rehoming Programme. Louise says he has a natural talent for ‘dressage flare’. They are currently competing at Medium/ Advanced Medium level. Greg has won the RoR medium regional title in 2023 and 2024 and won the RoR National title at Medium in 2023 and the RoR Special Open (open to those competing advanced medium and above) title in 2024 and 2025. Greg has an amazing trainable brain and loves the higher levels of dressage. Louise says, “Greg also loves performing in demonstrations, being part of community visits and meeting new people.”

7. SUMMERGHAND – ridden by Lydia de Souza 11-year-old gelding by Lope De Vego, formerly trained by David O’

Meara Breeder: Airlie Stud

Summerghand (known as Ghandy) was a winner of over £632k in his 106-race career and is now enjoying a slower pace of life at The British Racing School. Ghandy has the presence and swagger of a horse that knows he is good and very much still believes he is a racehorse! Ghandy is forward thinking and attacks every new challenge with the same enthusiasm that he used to race with he is starting to enjoy jumping. Ghandy is used primarily for our more experienced students, and he teaches them to ride with soft hands and tact, as they soon realise, they will not be able to control such a prolific sprinter with brute strength. In his new career, Ghandy is now enjoying plenty of time in the paddock with the other former racehorses at The British Racing School and is a much-loved member of the team.

8. VANCOUVERITE – ridden by Emily Simpson

14-year-old gelding by Dansili, formerly trained by John Ferguson Breeder: Darley

Since retiring in 2016, Pineau De Re has excelled in eventing, hunting, team chasing, dressage, and showing. He was runner-up in the RoR Horse of the Year 2022 and was a baton bearer for the 2022 Commonwealth Games Recently, we qualified for the BE100 Arena Eventing Championships, set for July 2025. Pineau has a wise look about him and is the king of the yard He loves living outside but enjoys coming in for breakfast and a morning snooze.

9. BARRACUDA BOY – ridden by Dannielle Carr

15-year-old gelding by Bahamian Bounty, formerly trained by Tom Dascombe and also Marjorie Fife. Breeder: Mount Coote Partnership

Barracuda Boy, AKA ‘Ronnie’ is owned by Debbie Hodge-Phillips had a very successful career as a sprinter winning over £103,000 in prize money and claimed a track record at Haydock Park over 5 furlongs He has retrained nicely as a Show horse and has proved to be just as successful in his new career out of racing. Barracuda boy has had an impressive 2025 Show season he won 1st place at Royal Windsor RoR Open In hand and was Reserve In hand Champion. At Equifest, he was first in the RoR Amateur Ridden Qualifier and then went Reserve Champion Racehorse to Riding Horse. At the Royal Norfolk Show he went Veteran Ridden Champion, and he finished off this year’s showing diary with a lovely day competing at the Defender Burghley Horse Trials where he behaved impeccably. 2026 looks to be just as busy with qualifiers already won for Hickstead in the RoR National Championships at Aintree. Debbie says,“He is a pleasure to have at home and is a real character”.

A tightly-knit Group 3 on Timeform ratings with GLADIUS just about the most persuasive option as he’s the one open to most progress after just 5 career starts. No shortage of untapped potential on show with HANKELOW selected to come out on top. A very good winner on debut at York in June, he took a sizeable step forward when beaten only by another very promising sort in Listed company at Doncaster 4 weeks ago, and there’s surely even more to come from Karl Burke’s colt now tackling 1m. Godolphin’s Al Zanati overcame greenness when a debut scorer on the July course 64 days ago and he’s feared. Archer Royal and Straight Up are others to consider

10YEAR

ROLLOF HONOUR

LASTYEAR’S WINNER

TRAINER: CHARLIE APPLEBY

JOCKEY: WILLIAM BUICK

OWNER: GODOLPHIN

Last year’s contest was an enthralling battle with the market favourite Shadow Of Light finding just enough to fend off the danger from Exapnded.

The son of Lope De Vega led the group over two furlongs out and continued to lead with a furlong to the line. He kept on well and found that little bit extra to deny the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt by a neck.

Appleby’s second runner, Ancient Truth, finished a further neck behind in third. This result saw Appleby and Buick make it three wins in the last six years in this contest

WILLIAM BUICK

William Buick and Charlie Appleby will be aiming for back-to-back wins and four in seven renewals with Distant Storm.

DARLEY DEWHURST STAKES PREVIEW

A field of nine lines up in today’s Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes The sevenfurlong event is Britain’s best two-year-old contest and frequently provides Classic pointers for the following season

Three of the last six renewals have gone to owner Godolphin, trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick, including last year with Shadow Of Light. The trio are responsible this year for likely favourite DISTANT STORM. The Night Of Thunder colt is already proven over today’s course and distance having been an impressive winner of last month’s Group Three Tattersalls Stakes Wind And Wuthering (1981), Grand Lodge (1993) and Milk It Mick (2003) all landed the Tattersalls Stakes prior to going on to Dewhurst success.

Godolphin and Appleby are also responsible for SABA DESERT, winner of the Group Two bet365 Superlative Stakes on the July Course but disappointing in Ireland last time and outsider PACIFIC AVENUE

Irish handler Aidan O’Brien has saddled a joint-record eight Dewhurst winners, with his most recent scorer being future Betfred Derby winner City Of Troy in 2023 Group Two Coventry Stakes winner and dual Group One runner-up GSTAAD leads Ballydoyle’s challenge this year and is joined by ITALY, who finished one place behind his stable companion last time when third in the Group One Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh on Irish Champions Weekend

The horse which won the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes by a head was ZAVATERI, who is one of two unbeaten colts in the line-up. The son of Without Parole has been a superstar this season with his quartet of victories also including the Group Two Kingdom Of Bahrain July Stakes at Newmarket and Goodwood’s Group Two Coral Vintage Stakes Zavateri is trained by Eve Johnson Houghton She is seeking her first Dewhurst success although her late father Fulke, who sadly passed away in February this year, was twice successful with Ribofilio (1968) and Tout Seul (2002)

No trainer has his string in better form at the moment than Karl Burke and he is responsible for ALPARSLAN The Dandy Man colt steps up into Group company for the first time following an impressive success in the Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sales Stakes at the Curragh in September.

In addition to the three Godolphin runners, Newmarket is also represented by the John and Thady Gosden-trained OXAGON, who followed up an eight-length victory in a novice race at Sandown Park with a solid second last time out in the Group Two Betfred Champagne Stakes at Doncaster behind subsequent Group One scorer Puerto Rico

Andrew Balding saddled the 2022 Darley Dewhurst Stakes victor Chaldean, who went on to capture the 2000 Guineas the following May. His runner in 2025 is GEWAN. Triumphant on his first two starts, he disappointed slightly last time out when fourth behind Puerto Rico at Doncaster.

CELEBRATING 150 YEARS OF THE DARLEY DEWHURST STAKES

On Dubai Future Champions Day at Newmarket in 2025 we are celebrating a very special anniversary as it is 150 years since the Dewhurst Stakes was inaugurated in 1875

The seven-furlong contest for two-year-old colts and fillies (although it has rarely been contested by the latter in modern times) was the brainchild of Thomas Gee, who named it after his stud at Wadhurst in Sussex Gee’s vision was to stage a race at the end of the season which would attract horses with Classic aspirations

It was a pretty much perfect start for Gee’s vision with the first Dewhurst Stakes winner in 1875, the Hungarian-bred colt Kisber, going on to victory in the Derby at Epsom Downs the following year Since then, a further 16 colts have followed up on Dewhurst Stakes success as a two-year-old with victory in the premier Classic the following year The most recent of these was City Of Troy in 2023/2024.

In a similar vein the 1876 Dewhurst Stakes winner Chamant progressed to win the first colts’ Classic, the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, the following season This feat has been repeated a further 17 times, most recently Chaldean in 2022/2023.

Throughout its century and a half existence, the Dewhurst Stakes has been won by many of the very best horses to have graced the turf in Britain From the future Triple Crown winners Ormonde (1885), Rock Sand (1902) and Nijinsky (1969) through to more recent superstars in El Gran Senor (1983) and the greatest of them all, Frankel (2010), the contest’s roll of honour can truly be classified as a glittering one

Among jockeys, it is the late, great Lester Piggott who is by far the most successful in the contest “The Long Fellow” partnered a record 10 Dewhurst Stakes victors courtesy of Crepello (1956), Follow Suit (1962), Ribofilio (1968), Nijinsky (1969), Crowned Prince (1971), Cellini (1973), The Minstrel (1976), Try My Best (1977), Monteverdi (1979) and Diesis (1982) Ryan Moore is the leading current jockey with five wins – Beethoven (2009), Air Force Blue (2015), Churchill (2016), U S Navy Flag (2017) and City Of Troy (2023)

John Porter, Frank Butters and Aidan O’Brien are the most successful trainers with eight successes apiece John Porter’s wins were Paradox (1884), Ormonde (1885), Friar’s Balsam (1887), Orme (1891), Matchbox (1893), Vesuvian (1896), Hawfinch (1897) and Frontier (1898) Frank Butters was successful with Toboggan (1927), Mrs Rustom (1933), Hairan (1934), Bala Hissar (1935), Sultan Mahomed (1936), Umiddad (1942), Paper Weight (1944) and Migoli (1946) Aidan O’Brien has triumphed so far with Rock Of Gibraltar (2001), Beethoven (2009), War Command (2013), Air Force Blue (2015), Churchill (2017), U S Navy Flag (2017), St Mark’s Basilica (2020) and City Of Troy (2023)

Another notable Dewhurst Stakes milestone this year is the quarter century sponsorship by Darley. Darley first sponsored the race in 2000 and its ongoing and generous support has been a significant factor in maintaining the Dewhurst in its rightful position as Britain’s premier two-year-old race

DECLARED RUNNERS 9 2024: SHADOW OF LIGHT 2 9 3 William Buick EVENS (Charlie Appleby) 5 ran Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn first time by No 8.

Stewards Note:

PACIFIC AVENUE: Following its run on 27/9/2025 it was reported that the horse suffered interference.

Probable S.P’s: 11-4 Distant Storm (GB), 7-2 Gstaad (GB), Zavateri (IRE), 9-1 Oxagon (FR), 14-1 Italy (GB), 16-1 Alparslan (IRE), 22-1 Gewan (GB), 50-1 Saba Desert (GB), 66-1 Pacific Avenue (IRE)

ZAVATERI is a juvenile of some merit, having edged out Gstaad in his own backyard in the National Stakes at the Curragh 4 weeks ago, and this tough and uncomplicated colt can become the eighth horse this century to complete the National Stakes/Dewhurst double. Gstaad is a huge threat again given the margins involved at the Curragh, while Distant Storm looked very exciting when winning a C&D Group 3 late last month.

LASTYEAR’S WINNER

LE GRANDE

A market outsider in the form of Alphonse Le Grande found just enough to secure last year’s renewal.

The Cathy O’Leary-trained five-year-old led the group from just over two furlongs out and kept on well to lead in the final strides.

Manxman had led briefly towards the finish but was unable to fend off the danger from Alphonse Le Grande.

Having initially been disqualified, the result was reinstated on appeal.

ALPHONSE LE GRANDE

Alphonse Le Grande will be aiming to make it back-to-back victories in this contest.

This is wide open but Ian Williams’ thriving BEYLERBEYI rates just the pick of the weights and is fanciedto bag win numberfourof2025 now he tackles a marathontrip forthe first time. Lastyear’s victor Alphonse Le Grande seems sure to play a big part again having caught the eye at York and the 3-y-o Pole Star is another who can go well now his stamina is unlocked. Belgravian, Reverand Hubert, Ndaawi and Bunting all command plenty of respect too in a cracking renewal.

DECLARED RUNNERS 7 2024: HYPERCHROMATIC (IRE) 2 8 13 Marco Ghiani 12-1 (Marco Botti) 8 ran

Stewards Note: KAMAKAMELEON: Following its run on 11/9/2025 it was reported that the horse was denied a clear run. PACIFICAPIER: Following its run on 11/9/2025 it was reported that the trainer could not explain the poor run.

Probable S.P’s: 11-4 Wedonttelllies (IRE), 10-3 Blue To Blue (IRE), 9-2 Cashbox (IRE), 6-1 Pacifica Pier (IRE), 10-1 Kamakameleon (GB), 14-1 Supreme Clarets (IRE), 16-1 Ecclefechan (GB)

KAMAKAMELEON’s form figures may not look pretty at first glance, but there is a far rosier picture beneath the surface with the colt having acquitted himself well in a number of very competitive races, not leasttheWindsorCastle at RoyalAscot and most recentlya hugelyvaluable sales race at Doncaster where he was unlucky not to finish closer He is an appealing value option upped to 7f for this nursery debut. The promising Wedonttelllies and hat-trick seeker Blue To Blue are obvious dangers.

DUBAI TREASURE’s latest effort on the July Course here needs forgiving, but that’s not hard given that she had looked progressive prior to that and the Exceed And Excel filly is taken to deliver for her in-form trainer and jockey Next on the list is Alfa Kellenic, who is entitled to come on for her belated reappearance spin at Ayr and she may well improve on last year’s fifth-place finish in this race Celandine boasts rock-solid form claims and is also feared, along with Circe

Racegoers must abide by any regulations including the observance of designated non-drinking areas

At Newmarket Racecourses we believe racing should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. And one thing is certainly true, the more relaxed and comfortable we feel, the more likely we are to have a great time. So that’s why we’ve created one very simple piece of guidance, to come “dressed to feel your best”.

We’re all unique, and no more so than in our sense of style and comfort. For some, wearing a nice sweatshirt, pair of jeans and clean trainers is what makes them feel confident and at-ease. For others, they might prefer to turn heads with a sharp suit or glamorous dress and high heels, particularly for one of our big race meetings But whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather. Here’s some other useful tips and advice for making sure your time with us is as memorable as possible.

Fancy dress can often add colour and fun to our racedays, but please avoid inappropriate or offensive outfits, as anything deemed vulgar or derogatory may be refused entry.

We love other sports as much as anyone, but showing allegiance to a favourite club can sometimes appear antagonistic So, to keep things simple, please refrain from wearing team kits when attending one of our racedays.

Only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets in the course of their business. Any individuals found contravening these conditions will be evicted. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc, for any purpose at the racecourse.

EMERGENCY NOTICE

In an event of an emergency please be guided by our security stewards and by messages you will see and hear around the racecourse We would advise that you keep your personal belongings with you at all times. In the event of an evacuation please do as requested by Newmarket Racecourses Management and security staff They will direct you to a safe place. Do not attempt to regain access to buildings

FEEDBACK

We are always pleased to hear from our customers and are grateful for any feedback you can provide about your visit today. There are short contact forms available online at thejockeyclub.co.uk/ newmarket and we value your comments

HBLB PRIZE MONEY

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
