A Word From The Editor

Autumn has always felt like the season that kicks off the holidays, and there’s something especially magical about this time of year. The air is finally cooler, the days a little shorter, and every month ahead seems filled with reasons to gather, whether it’s cozy dinners at home, neighborhood festivals, or simply enjoying the changing colors around us.

For me, this year feels extra special. With two young boys (ages 1.5 and 3.5), the joy of the season takes on a whole new meaning. Watching their eyes light up at pumpkin patches, their excitement over costumes, or their delight in family traditions reminds me how fleeting these years are. I know I’ll treasure these memories long after they’ve outgrown the tiny shoes and sticky fingers that come with this stage of life.

In this Autumn Issue, we’ve filled the pages with inspiration to help you celebrate the season in your own way, whether that’s through delicious fall recipes and festive drinks, exploring our detailed map of local pumpkin patches, or gathering ideas to make your home feel warm and welcoming. It’s a season of connection, and our hope is that this issue brings you both inspiration and joy as you celebrate with the people who mean the most.

Here’s to the start of a beautiful season of gathering, celebrating, and creating memories.

MURRAY FAMILY FARMS:

A Legacy of Resilience and Community

Words by Lifestyle Staff
Photos by Murray Family Farms

THE TRADITION OF MURRAY FAMILY FARMS BEGAN OUT OF HARDSHIP.

TheMurray Family Farms barns will have you thinking you're seeing colors. You actually are—and if you're from the South Valley you've probably heard of them, too. This fifth-generation farming family is now led by Steve and Vickie Murray of Bakersfield, California. The family's agricultural history stretches as far back as the 1920s, when their prize-winning pigs were featured in Swine World Magazine.

The tradition of Murray Family Farms began out of hardship. The day Steve’s mother was born was also the day Steve’s grandfather passed away during a beekeeping accident; the family lost their farm. Annabelle Murray, Steve’s mother, continued to carry a passion for agriculture that she passed on to her son.

As a boy, Steve planted a miniature orchard with his father, experimenting with different cherry varieties. But again, tragedy struck: His own father passed away suddenly when Steve was a teenager. Forced from their riverside home and into government assistance, Steve took to the soil once more, planting a garden to help feed his family. Determined to pursue his agricultural dream, he worked his way through college with the support of public assistance and scholarships, ultimately graduating from the University of California, Riverside with a degree in Plant Science.

Steve’s dream began to take shape when he met Vickie, who brought her own passion for conservation and hospitality, along with a degree from the University of Idaho. Together, they shared a vision of building a life on the land. In 1983, they launched S.M. Apiaries, a venture that quickly grew to 300 beehives. That success gave them the means to purchase a 20-acre table grape farm just outside Bakersfield.

One day, an opportunity arrived that would forever change the trajectory of the Murray farm. They were asked to grow new cherry varieties. Remembering his childhood orchard with his father, Steve decided to take the chance. The risk paid off in extraordinary ways.

The farm’s unique location at the base of the Tehachapi Mountains created a microclimate that produced an unexpectedly early cherry harvest. Pairing these new varieties with traditional farming techniques, the Murrays discovered they were harvesting the first cherries in the world each season. International buyers from Europe, China, and Japan quickly took notice. With little more than determination and a commitment to freshness, the family shipped fruit directly after harvest. Their philosophy of “Pick Today for Tomorrow” set them apart and established their enduring promise: “Grown Ripe for You.”

That spirit of innovation remains central to the farm. Today, Murray Family Farms grows more than 350 varieties of fruit, including a remarkable collection of rare and exotic produce curated by Steven Murray Jr., who now manages the West Coast’s largest collection of unique crops. His work has brought attention from television and online platforms, introducing even more people to the Murray family’s pioneering efforts.

“VICKIE AND I BEGAN THE BUSINESS WITH OUR BABIES IN BACKPACKS, SELLING FRESH-PICKED RIPE FRUIT AT LOCAL FARMERS MARKETS.”

The farm’s success also allowed the Murrays to fulfill a dream: sharing the joy of farming with the public. Their first roadside stop, the Little Purple Barn, welcomed visitors off Interstate 5. But it was the opening of the Big Red Barn on Highway 58 that truly put them on the map. Families began arriving from near and far to pick fruit, ride tractors, and explore the farm. As the crowds grew, the Murrays added attractions to keep visitors entertained, from a giant bounce pillow to a playground. Today, the Big Red Barn welcomes a quarter of a million schoolchildren each year to learn about agriculture and pick their own produce.

“Vickie and I began the business with our babies in backpacks, selling fresh-picked ripe fruit at local farmers markets,” Steve shares. “That love of directly connecting with our customers and the affirmations we received about our unique fruit offerings motivated us to develop our family-oriented U-pick farm venues, markets, and off-site connections at farmers markets. Now, it’s something that employs our entire family.”

Over time, Murray Family Farms has grown into a destination full of activities, including a three-story slide, a swirling vortex tunnel, paintball, giant cannons, and Bakersfield’s first musical playground. The farm has even partnered with major brands such as Universal Pictures, Disney, and Electronic Arts to bring added excitement to seasonal events.

Still, their heart remains in tradition. “It warms my heart to see multigenerational Murray Family Farms fanatics returning year after year, creating fond memories and sharing precious time together,” says Steve.

Beyond the pink ribbon:

THE POWER OF PROACTIVE HEALTH

EveryOctober, the pink ribbon serves as a powerful reminder for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. But beyond the symbol, the true strength lies in the proactive choices women make every day to protect their health. This month, Family HealthCare Network (FHCN) aims to empower you with the education and care necessary to prioritize breast health.

The foundation of women's health starts with self-awareness. Regular breast exams are a vital first step, allowing you to identify any abnormalities early on. This daily habit is crucial, as early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment.

The Most Powerful Tool for Early Detection: Mammograms

While self-exams are a great starting point, nothing compares to the effectiveness of a mammogram. A mammogram can detect signs of breast abnormalities long before they can be felt. Medical professionals cannot underestimate their significance; it is the most effective method to combat breast cancer.

General guidelines recommend that women aged 50 to 74 get a mammogram every two years. If you are under 50, your doctor can help you determine the right screening schedule based on your individual risk factors and health history. Family HealthCare Network provides breast screenings and is dedicated to helping women navigate their health journey with confidence and support.

Your Partner in Care: Family HealthCare Network

The team at Family HealthCare Network is proud to provide exceptional women’s health services to residents of Visalia and the surrounding areas. Fall in love with less:

THE CAPSULE WARDROBE MADE SIMPLE

Haveyou ever stood in front of your closet feeling like you have “nothing to wear”? Yes? You’re not alone. So many of us get caught in a cycle of buying pieces of clothing that don’t quite work. We feel like we have so much, but we can’t seem to put the right outfit together, leaving us feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. That’s where the capsule wardrobe comes in.

A capsule wardrobe is simply a smaller, intentional collection of clothing that mixes and matches with ease. Instead of overflowing drawers and endless decisions, you have a handful of versatile, well-chosen items that make getting dressed simple, stylish, and stress-free. Think of it as editing your closet down to the pieces you love most—the pieces that always make you feel confident. And here’s the best part: less really is more. Having fewer options actually makes it easier to look put together every day.

Fall is the perfect season to try this approach. The layers, the textures, and the rich colors make it one of the most exciting times to refresh your style without overstuffing your closet.
Here’s how to start building your own cozy capsule wardrobe for fall:

1

Step 1: Start with Your Foundation Pieces

Begin with timeless essentials you can wear on repeat. A tailored blazer, well-fitting jeans, a cozy neutral sweater, a crisp poplin blouse, a gorgeous wool coat, and sleek trousers are my favorite pieces to form the backbone of your fall wardrobe.

When shopping for these foundational pieces, you want to ensure two things. First: that they are classic pieces that will never go out of style. And second, these pieces should fit you impeccably. Keep searching until you find the right fit for you. And if all else fails, call your tailor. Once you feel amazing about these core pieces, you can create endless outfit combinations for any occasion from casual to dressy.

2

Step 2: Choose Colors That Flatter You

Fall fashion often leans into earthy shades like camel, olive, rust, and deep burgundy. While these look beautiful, the real magic happens when you choose versions of these colors that flatter your skin tone. Wearing your best colors makes your whole look feel vibrant and intentional. That’s where color analysis comes in—this is a service I offer in my Clovis studio to help clients discover the color palette that lights them up. Once you know your colors, curating a capsule becomes even easier, because every piece works together and works for you.

3

Step 3: Add Pieces That Make a Statement

Here’s where your capsule wardrobe really becomes yours. Accessories and shoes are the best way to inject personality into your outfits. This is your chance to add on the pieces that really speak to your personal style and ensure your outfits never feel boring, even when you’re working with fewer items.

For fall, I recommend a beautiful structured handbag, a black leather belt, and a silk scarf to elevate your look. For shoes, suede ankle boots are the season’s hero piece, while loafers or chic sneakers are great options to keep your outfits practical for everyday. Adding pieces that feel distinctly “you” can take a simple look and turn it into something special.

4

Step 4: Keep It Simple

The goal isn’t to have dozens of new pieces; it’s to have about 20-30 items you truly love and can wear in different combinations. When everything in your closet pairs well, you’ll spend less time stressing and more time feeling confident and ready for your day.

A capsule wardrobe is all about freedom rather than following strict fashion rules. Freedom from closet chaos, from wasted shopping, and from that nagging “I have nothing to wear” feeling. When you edit down to the pieces that fit your lifestyle and reflect who you truly are, getting dressed becomes a joyous form of self-care.

A SANCTUARY OF JOY:

A COZY WELCOME

FOR THE FALL SEASON

Words by Lifestyle Staff
Photos by Dakota Jacobi-Stephenson

Nestled in Visalia, California, is a home that tells a love story; a tale of patience, growth, and the beauty of making a space your own. Once a dated property with “purple walls, pebble tec counters—yes, counters,” the home of BryAnn and Parker Buhl, their son Cav, and three playful doodles is now a sanctuary of warmth, comfort, and deep personal meaning.

“This wasn’t an instant transformation,” BryAnn shares. “At first, we rushed through renovations just to move in faster, but as time went on we realized it was okay to let the house grow with us. Every year, we’ve added little layers of ourselves into it.” With decor, paint, photos, and textiles, the couple has filled the home with character and memories. Inspired by the designs of Molly Kidd, their goal was to create a home with a story—and they’ve succeeded.

A Home Built on Love and Community

The Buhls’ love for their home is deeply tied to their love for the community around them. For BryAnn, who grew up in Lemoore, returning to the Valley after college wasn’t just coming home—it was embracing where she truly belonged. Today, she has built a reputation as a highly regarded realtor, serving clients across California’s Central Valley and Central Coast. Her ability to blend local roots with professional expertise has made her a trusted name in the region.

“When Parker and I discovered this home, it felt like the perfect chance to put down roots,” BryAnn shares.

While BryAnn leads with her passion for real estate and community, Parker complements her vision with his own strong background in business and property investment as Co-Owner of 10X Investments LLC, owner of Buhl Investments, and real estate broker Iron Key Real Estate. Together, their shared drive and dedication give depth to both their work and their home.

Staying true to their values, the couple chose to work with local talent for their renovation. “There is so much creativity and skill within the Valley—it was an easy choice,” BryAnn says of their collaboration with Sanctuaire Interiors and HLC Studio.

The home is the heart of their daily life. As a couple who both work from home, it serves as their office and their retreat. “We always say our house has to do double duty—it’s where we work, but it’s also where we rest and raise Cav,” BryAnn says. The kitchen, with its oversized island and breakfast nook, is the central hub where friends and family are always welcome.

The most cherished part of their home’s history, however, isn’t about design or entertaining—it’s the place where BryAnn and Parker were married. “It makes this space even more special knowing that’s where our forever started,” she says.

Designed for Living

When it’s time to unwind, the couple retreats to their master suite, their “favorite getaway.” Entertaining, on the other hand, often happens outdoors or around the island in the kitchen. “We designed it to be flexible—it can be quiet and cozy, or full of people and laughter,” BryAnn says.

When asked to describe their home’s personality, she doesn’t hesitate: “Warm, comforting, and private.” For her, the most personal touches are “the color choices for sure, but also the fun décor pieces and light fixtures that really feel like us.”

For their son Cav's nursery, BryAnn wanted a unique space with a "beach vibe, but not what you’d normally find on Pinterest." She collaborated with Kelsey Ormonde at Sanctuaire Interiors on a beautiful wall mural, a fun project that set the tone for the room. “Parker and his dad handmade the window box/seat and the oversized floating shelves! That’s by far my favorite part of the nursery,” she shares. “They give so much character and warmth, while still being functional!”

The Feeling of Fall

As the seasons shift, the Buhls welcome autumn in a subtle way. “I don’t do a ton of seasonal decorating—it’s more about the feeling,” BryAnn explains. “I love switching up textiles to give more coziness and warmth. Adding a few warm tones and candles makes the whole house feel like fall without being over the top.”

For the Buhls, the best part of the season is simple. “Our favorite part of fall is cooler weather to enjoy relaxing outside or cozying up for a date night at home,” BryAnn says. When it comes to a date night in, the couple has their go-to movies. “I’m a sucker for Hocus Pocus, but I also love Practical Magic and anything by Nancy Meyers!”

That intentional focus on ambiance is what defines their home. “At the end of the day, I just want it to feel like us,” she says. “If people walk in and instantly feel happy and comfortable, then we’ve done it right.”

Ultimately, the Buhls have built a home guided by love, community, and authenticity. Every corner is a reflection of their family’s story, a place where joy and comfort take center stage.

“At the end of the day, I just want it to feel like us. If people walk in and instantly feel happy and comfortable, then we’ve done it right.”

Autumn

Autumn is the most enchanting time of the year. It’s the arrival of clear, crisp air after summer’s dusty, intense heat; the excitement of school and sports back in full swing; warming foods and drinks that comfort like no others can; the sounds of crunching leaves and marching bands; and special times with family and friends as the holidays appear on the horizon. During this time of high energy, autumn also magically brings with her an aura of calm; a pull to savor mindful moments and take time for cleansing breaths as we reflect on the year.

Slowing down as we simultaneously begin to gear up for fall events and the holiday season is a challenging juxtaposition indeed. Fall arrives for me the second that I sense a barely perceptible change in the late August atmosphere—an ever-so subtle softening of the sun’s rays in the morning light, with perhaps the slightest hint of a chill in the early air. At that moment, my mind starts creating a “Celebrate Autumn” list that will infuse every day with seasonal fun and flair, for me and for the ones I love. Want to create your own list? (Or add to one?)

Here are some favorite things to do:

Leaf-peeping. Taking drives or trips to view and photograph fall colors in all their glory is a common activity across the country, especially in regions known for spectacular autumn displays. The jewel tones of autumn definitely show themselves here in the Central Valley, too! Simply taking a walk in your neighborhood or local areas will surround you with autumn’s beauty. Stand under a tree on a breezy day and let the leaves float down around you. Ancient folklore has it that for every leaf you catch before it touches the ground, you will have one month of good luck in the coming year.

Give your home (and office) a fall glow-up! From the front door through every room, welcome guests and the change of seasons with the beauty and whimsy of deep colors, classic autumnal scents, and fun décor. Change your throw blankets and pillows for extra cozy conversation spots.

Get Cozy. Speaking of blankets, curl up in one by a cozy fire, or soak in a candle-lit scented bath with a cup of spiced hot cider or cocoa and a stack of fall magazines, cookbooks, and novels. (Bonus points for cozy mystery novels.)

Savor sweater weather! Day trips to cooler locations, like Three Rivers or Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks, provide opportunities to bundle up in scarves, coats, and thick socks with boots. Look for special events commemorating the season (like the Springville Apple Festival). Fall is a beautiful time for wine tasting, too.

Visit a pumpkin patch. See all the varieties that are available, along with gourds, corn stalks, hay bales, and giant sunflowers. Bring pumpkins home to carve, decorate, and cook in—search online and in cookbooks for soup and stew recipes cooked and served in pumpkins.

Fill up on fall. Bake all the warmly spiced breads and cookies; simmer apple cider and mulled wine on the stove. Search out fall flavors and unique foods to add to everyday dishes. Pumpkin macaroni and cheese or chili? Yes, please! (In some stores you might even find limited edition products like cheeses with pumpkin spice. Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it!)

Visit the farmers market. Fill your shopping bag with apples, jujubes (Chinese dates), pears, persimmons, pomegranates, pumpkins, butternut and spaghetti squash, and more. On second thought, you might want to bring a wagon! Chat with the vendors about creative ways to cook with, serve, and preserve the produce.

Browse through seasonal treasures! Pop into antique and thrift stores and search for vintage plaid thermoses and Halloween décor. Beautiful dishes for Thanksgiving dinner may reveal themselves to patient shoppers willing to slowly stroll the aisles and listen for items that call to them.

Warm up together. Brisk, bright days are perfect for gathering your favorite people. Tailgate parties at home or in the stadium parking lot, wine and charcuterie tastings, festive brunches, dinners both fancy and casual, and game nights are toasts to togetherness with family, friends, and the flavors of the season.

Every now and then, stop and just let autumn surround you. Listen to the happy chatter of special people. Breathe in the freshness of cold morning air, kettle corn at a football game or the rustic scent of a wood burning fire. Let the light of the full Harvest Moon shine down on you, refreshing and realigning your spirit with the season. All these charmed moments will become indelible memories in your mind that will bring you comfort all through the year, and have you counting the days until autumn arrives again.

Where beauty meets

Verity Aesthetics in Visalia, beauty begins with trust. That’s the vision founder and aesthetic nurse injector, Nikki Aguirre, MSN, FNP-C, brought to life when she opened her practice. With more than a decade of experience in the aesthetics industry, Nikki has built her career on one guiding principle: Clients come first.

“Aesthetic medicine is still medicine,” she emphasizes. “That means safety, results, and transparency always take priority.” Verity Aesthetics was designed to be more than a clinic. It’s also a space where every client feels informed, supported, and confident in their decisions.

"My philosophy is to enhance natural beauty in a way that looks effortless and true to each person."

A Philosophy Rooted in Natural Beauty

At Verity Aesthetics, the goal isn’t to chase trends or create dramatic, one-size-fits-all results. Instead, every treatment plan begins with a conversation. Clients are asked about their personal goals, and from there, a customized path is designed.

“Sometimes the best results come from looking beyond what seems obvious,” Nikki explains. “Someone might ask for lip filler, but what they actually need is a little chin filler to bring balance to their face. My philosophy is to enhance natural beauty in a way that looks effortless and true to each person.”

That commitment to subtlety and artistry has built Verity Aesthetics a loyal following, much of it through word-of-mouth referrals. Clients know they can expect honesty, a personalized approach, and results that help them feel like the best version of themselves - never overdone.

Popular Services Clients Love

The most requested treatments right now are neuromodulators, often referred to by their most popular brand name, Botox. These treatments smooth fine lines by relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles, resulting in a refreshed, natural look. Skin health is also a major focus, with clients seeking both in-office treatments and professional-grade products to achieve that coveted glow.

But the services go beyond beauty trends. Each recommendation is based on what will truly benefit the client’s features, skin health, and overall goals. It’s not about doing more—it’s about doing what’s right.

Education and Empowerment

For many first-time patients, the idea of starting Botox or filler can feel intimidating. That’s why education is central to the experience at Verity Aesthetics. Each treatment is explained from start to finish, including recovery and realistic expectations. Clients leave not only with results but also with a deeper understanding of their options.

“There are so many misconceptions out there,” Nikki says. “People think Botox is only for women over 40, or that it will make them look frozen. The reality is, when it’s done well by a trained professional, the results are often so natural they’re undetectable. Most of the people you see and think, ‘Wow, they look great,’ have had some form of treatment.”

She adds that Botox can be just as beneficial for men, and it isn’t only for smoothing wrinkles. It’s also FDA-approved for medical uses, including jaw pain, migraines, and excessive sweating.

Skin First, Always

While injectables are often the first thing people think of when they hear “aesthetics,” Nikki knows skin health is the true foundation of beauty. That’s why Verity carefully vets every skincare treatment and product offered, ensuring they are safe, effective, and results-driven.

“If I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing it myself or recommending it to my family, it won’t make it onto our menu,” Nikki says. That level of integrity helps sets Verity apart.

Building Trust, One Client at a Time

At its heart, Verity Aesthetics is about people. The focus isn’t just on techniques and treatments, but on building relationships. Clients often come in through referrals from friends or family, which creates an immediate sense of comfort and trust. From there, it’s about creating an experience where clients feel heard, valued, and empowered in their choices.

“I want every visit to feel liberating,” Nikki explains. “I want people to leave feeling better than when they walked in—not just because of how they look, but because of the confidence they gain.”

Aesthetic Care You Can Trust

The aesthetics industry can sometimes feel overwhelming, but Verity Aesthetics offers a refreshing perspective: honest advice, natural results, and a commitment to ongoing education and safety.

Nikki’s advice for anyone considering Botox or aesthetic treatments for the first time? Do your research and find a provider you trust. “This is medicine,” she reminds us. “Your provider should be someone who invests in their training, respects your goals, and takes the time to make sure you feel comfortable. That’s the kind of care we’re proud to provide here at Verity.”

HOW THE SOURCE IS BUILDING A THRIVING COMMUNITY IN THE SOUTH VALLEY

Words by Lifestyle Staff and in collaboration with The Source

Formany from the Central Valley, the story is a familiar one: you leave for a big city in search of opportunities. But for Visalia natives Brian Poth and Nick Vargas, their journey came full circle. After building successful careers in Los Angeles and San Francisco, they returned home with a powerful vision: to create a center that not only provided essential services but also wove a thread of pride and belonging into the very fabric of their hometown.

And the impact is undeniable. Each year, The Source contributes over $150,000 to local businesses and venues, collaborates with organizations like Visit Visalia and the Visalia Chamber of Commerce, and even helps major employers like Kaweah Health and Amazon recruit diverse talent by showcasing the South Valley as a place where inclusivity thrives.

The recognition has followed. From the James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award to being named Nonprofit of the Year by the Tulare Kings Hispanic Chamber, The Source has earned accolades that highlight its vision and leadership. But beyond the awards are the stories, the individual lives saved, families supported, and futures transformed. Those are the true markers of success.

One of the clearest testaments to their impact comes each year at Pride Visalia—a joyful celebration of love, culture, and community. On October 11th, from 11:30am to 5pm at Valley Strong Ballpark, thousands will gather for live music, food, entertainment, and over 80 community booths. Pride isn’t just a celebration; it’s a living symbol of what happens when people come together. The Source is powerful because it’s community-powered. Whether you show up, volunteer, or give, every action builds momentum toward a future where everyone feels safe, valued, and celebrated.

"THE SOURCE IS POWERFUL BECAUSE IT’S COMMUNITY-POWERED. WHETHER YOU SHOW UP, VOLUNTEER, OR GIVE, EVERY ACTION BUILDS MOMENTUM TOWARD A FUTURE WHERE EVERYONE FEELS SAFE, VALUED, AND CELEBRATED."

HISTORY

WORLD’S GREATEST SHOW COMES TO TOWN

In1903 as the hot summer began to give way to the cooler temperatures of autumn, Visalians looked forward to the change. But their anticipation went beyond cooler weather. Fall often meant a visit from the Ringling Bros. circus. The famous performers had come to Visalia in 1900 and 1901. Having skipped in 1902, they were now coming back, and Visalians were ready for the “largest circus on earth.”

The town of about 3,000 first got wind of the 1903 return visit in August when George Heiser, the advance man for the company, arrived in town. His presence did not escape the Daily Visalia Delta that speculated, after spotting him, that soon every billboard and wall in the county would be covered with posters for the big circus. Shortly after Heiser’s arrival, rumors of the circus were confirmed when August “Gus” Ringling, one of the famous brothers, arrived in town and checked into the Palace Hotel on September 3rd. It was clear the circus was once again coming to Visalia.

Word spread quickly: The circus was scheduled for Friday, September 25th. As usual, the big street parade would begin at 10am, followed by two show times at 2pm and 8pm. Ticket prices were set at 50 cents and children under 12 were half price. The S. Sweet Company didn’t waste any time in getting involved in its promotion by offering one free child’s ticket to anyone who made a $5.00 cash purchase at their store. The newspaper provided frequent circus updates throughout the month to build excitement and sell tickets. In the early morning hours of the big day, the circus train arrived and a tent city quickly sprang up on the western edge of town (near today’s Recreation Park).

Soon circus animals and performers began assembling on east Main Street to prepare for the big parade. At 10:00 am, with both sides of the street lined with excited spectators, the circus trumpets sounded and the parade began moving westbound on Main to give the audience a taste of the shows to come. For over 1½ miles, the procession stretched through town. Performers of all kinds walked and marched down the street and wild animals were displayed in brightly colored circus cages mounted on elaborately carved and decorated wagons being pulled by powerful teams of horses.

AUGUST “GUS” RINGLING, ONE OF THE FAMOUS BROTHERS, CHECKED INTO THE PALACE HOTEL ON SEPTEMBER 3, 1903.

Mounted on horseback, riders wearing a variety of costumes rode down Main Street, proudly showing off their garb. Acrobats and clowns entertained the crowds with their antics, while performers dressed like barbarians, explorers, and scientists marched along. All 1,200 characters in the “Jerusalem & the Crusades” spectacle paraded in costume down Main Street, singing and dancing, showing off their fancy attire and amazing talent. Of special interest was a grand organ mounted on a wagon. It was described as the largest portable organ ever built. The crowd loved it!

The free street parade was clearly popular with the spectators, and the circus company was also pleased. The parade’s purpose was to generate interest in buying show tickets. The shows were the company’s moneymakers, and the parade worked its magic.

The two shows were a big hit! 375 human performers worked in six big arenas with over 600 horses and 40 elephants including “Baby Boo”—the only baby elephant bred, born, and successfully reared in America at that time. The shows also included a rhinoceros and a pair of giraffes—three animals the circus claimed were the only ones in captivity.

New that year as part of the shows was the ballet spectacle previewed in the parade called “Jerusalem and the Crusaders.” The massive production involved about 1,200 actors including dancing girls, musicians, and chorus singers. The new production required a huge electrified canvas tent—the largest that had ever been used by a circus.

The two shows were as impressive as the parade. The one-day visit left a lasting mark on the town and the Delta reported, “The Ringling Bros. have always had a progressive, modern and incomparably big show, but this year they have gone to amazingly extravagant lengths in every department, not only surpassing their best previous achievements, but beyond question have reached the limit of human possibility.” The circus was so large that 85 double-length railroad cars were needed to hold and transport the necessary equipment, performers, and animals.

The business community was pleased too. Stores, hotels, restaurants, livery stables, and saloons did “enormous” business, and the town marshal was also relieved when he reported Visalia was unusually quiet. Only nine arrests had been made for public intoxication—a remarkably small number given the number of visitors. Both the Southern Pacific and the Santa Fe railroads adjusted their passenger train schedules to accommodate the large crowds.

However, the event left a small blemish on the circus. In all the excitement to get the word out, circus posters were pasted on the freshly painted walls of the Union warehouses, damaging the buildings to the tune of $1,000. Warehouse company officials filed a complaint against the circus for the damage. Regardless, the vast majority declared the circus’ 1903 visit an overwhelming success.

After the last performance, the tent village was disassembled and all the show people, animals, and equipment were loaded back onto the train cars. The “Biggest Circus on Earth” headed south. Next stop: Bakersfield.

Nearly 15,000 circus fans had seen the two performances and thousands more witnessed the street parade. The Delta spoke for many when they reported, “Ringling Brothers have established a reputation for themselves that will long live as circus people. They will always be welcome here…”
