Tralee Art Group Unveils Two Inspiring November Exhibitions

Tralee Art Group is delighted to present two new exhibitions this November, each reflecting the beauty, heritage, and creativity of Kerry.

The first, “Local Architecture,” opens on Saturday, November 1st at 3pm in Tralee Library and will be launched by acclaimed architect Louise Cotter, who represented Ireland at the 2025 Venice Biennale. The exhibition explores the charm of Kerry’s built heritage — from hidden gems to iconic landmarks — and runs until November 15th.

The second exhibition, “Nature’s Palette,” opens on Thursday,

November 6th at 6pm in Siamsa Tíre, launched by Don Nolan of Liscahane Nursery. This vibrant collection celebrates the colours and moods of the natural world — the shifting light of the Kerry coastline, tranquil forests, and rural fields. It will remain open daily until November 25th. Both exhibitions feature original artworks and high-quality prints for sale, offering visitors the chance to find a unique piece for their home or a special Christmas gift. With over 50 members working in a variety of media and styles, Tralee Art Group continues to promote artistic diversity and community spirit throughout Kerry. Community Means the World to Down Syndrome Kerry

Down Syndrome Kerry (DSK) proudly celebrates the incredible generosity of the local community — the heartbeat of everything it does. Every fundraiser, donation, and act of kindness helps DSK deliver vital therapies and supports to members and families across the county. Fundraising remains essential to sustaining key services such as speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, early intervention supports, adult education, and employment initiatives. Without the ongoing goodwill of families, businesses, and community groups, these life-changing services simply

would not exist. Among DSK’s many supporters, the Roche family continues to stand out for their long-term dedication and generosity. Their tireless fundraising efforts and commitment to raising awareness perfectly reflect the community spirit that drives DSK’s mission. A recent cheque presentation at Deenagh Lodge, home of the Deenagh Café — a social enterprise run by DSK members and volunteers — highlighted this shared effort. In attendance were John O’Connor, Chairman of DSK, members of the Deenagh Café team, Siobhan Walsh, Operations Manager, and the Roche family, who proudly presented funds

raised through their latest initiative. Down Syndrome Kerry extends heartfelt thanks to the Roche family and all supporters who help create opportunities, build confidence,

and foster inclusion for people with Down syndrome throughout Kerry. To support or get involved, email graceodonnell@downsyndrome.ie or follow DSK on social media.

Warriors Overpower St. Paul’s to Open Ladies Campaign in Style

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors Women began their 2025/26 BIDL League season in impressive fashion with a commanding 53–34 victory over local rivals St. Paul’s Killarney at Kilcummin National School on Saturday.

The Warriors dominated from the outset, racing into a 22–5 first-quarter lead thanks to threepointers from Aisling Counihan, Priya O’Donovan, and Mary Kate Smith. Further scores from Kelly Fitzgerald, O’Donovan, and Louise Galvin extended the advantage in a blistering opening spell.

In the second quarter, Emily Flynn and O’Donovan added to the tally before Orla O’Mahony struck twice to send the visitors into halftime with a commanding 36–14 lead.

The Warriors continued their dominance in the third period, with Meábh Barry getting on the board and O’Mahony adding three more baskets to stretch the gap beyond 30 points. Despite efforts from Jade Potts and Liadh Tobin, St. Paul’s found themselves trailing 47–22 heading into the final quarter. St. Paul’s fought bravely in the closing minutes, outscoring the Warriors 12–6 in the last quarter, led by Amanda Brosnan’s seven points and a three-pointer from Mags Cronin. However, the early damage proved decisive as Flynn, Smith, and Galvin sealed the result for Tralee. A strong all-round performance ensured the Warriors opened their campaign in style, marking themselves as early contenders in

to support an event that champions timeless elegance and creativity.”

The evening will conclude with a post-show party, where guests can mingle, celebrate, and soak up the sparkle of one of Kerry’s most stylish nights of the year.

Kerry Star Ben Murphy Set for AFL Move to Brisbane Lions

Kerry Under-20 footballer Ben Murphy is set to become the latest GAA talent to make the move to the AFL, with the Brisbane Lions expected to sign the Austin Stacks player on a category B rookie contract later this month.

The 18-year-old, who starred for Kerry minors in 2023 and 2024 and featured under Tomás Ó Sé at U20 level this year, reportedly impressed during a trial in August. Murphy will line out for Stacks this weekend against Rathmore in the Kerry SFC semi-final before heading Down Under. His move adds to the growing list of Kerry players joining the AFL ranks, including Mark O’Connor and Cillian Burke. Manager Tomás Ó Sé previously voiced concern about AFL clubs “tapping up” young players during key stages of their education and development.

How to Protect Your Android Phone from Viruses

Android phones are powerful and versatile, but their popularity also makes them a common target for viruses and malware. Fortunately, keeping your device safe is easy if you follow a few simple steps.

1. Download Apps Only from Trusted Sources

Always use the Google Play Store or other reputable app stores. Avoid downloading apps from unknown websites or links shared on social media — these are common sources of malware.

2. Check App Permissions

Before installing an app, review the permissions it requests. Be cautious if a simple app (like a ashlight or calculator) asks for access to your contacts, camera, or location.

3. Keep Your Software Updated

Regular updates patch security holes and protect against new threats. Make sure your Android system and apps are set to update automatically.

4. Use Mobile Security Software

Install a reputable antivirus or security app that can scan for threats and protect your phone in real time. Many trusted options are free or low-cost.

5. Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Sensitive Tasks Hackers often exploit unsecured networks. When using public Wi-Fi, avoid accessing banking or shopping apps. Consider using a VPN for extra protection.

6. Don’t Click Suspicious Links or Attachments

Be wary of messages or emails from unknown sources. Even if they appear to come from someone you know, don’t click links or open attachments unless you’re sure they’re safe.

7. Backup Your Data Regularly

In case of an infection or data loss, regular backups to Google Drive or another cloud service ensure you can restore your important les easily.

In short: Stay cautious, keep your phone updated, and use trusted tools. A little prevention goes a long way in keeping your Android device virus-free.

Na Gaeil GAA Club Wins Irish Language Award at National Lottery Good Causes Awards 2025

Tralee-based Na Gaeil CLG has proudly won the Irish Language Award at the 2025 National Lottery Good Causes Awards, recognising its exceptional dedication to promoting the Irish language through sport, culture, and community life.

The club has become a shining example of how the GAA can nurture the Irish language by making it part of daily activities — from running Irish classes and bilingual events to encouraging members to use the language both on and off the pitch. Na Gaeil’s approach ensures the language remains vibrant, relevant, and accessible for future generations.

The awards, hosted by Marty Whelan at Killashee House Hotel, Co. Kildare on October 18th, celebrate inspiring individuals and organisations across Ireland supported by National Lottery Good Causes funding.

The Irish Language Award was presented to Na Gaeil CLG by broadcaster and Kerry native Daithí O’Sé, Chair of the 2025 judging panel, who praised the club’s “living, breathing” approach to language promotion.

“Na Gaeil CLG are true champions of Irish,” he said. “They’ve made the language an organic part of their club, inspiring young people to use it naturally and with pride.”

Na Gaeil CLG received a €10,000 prize as category winners.

Cian Murphy, Chief Executive of the National Lottery, congratulated the club, saying the 2025 winners “represent the very best of our communities — building a fairer, more compassionate Ireland through passion and purpose.”

Scoil Eoin Surpasses Record with Over 400 Shoeboxes for Team Hope Appeal

The Scoil Eoin community of pupils, parents, and friends has once again demonstrated outstanding generosity, surpassing all previous years in their annual Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal. This year, the school collected over 400 shoeboxes, each filled with thoughtful gifts for children in need. The initiative, a long-standing tradition at Scoil Eoin, is organised each year by the Student Council and their coordinator, Mrs. Carol Anne O’Donoghue. The enthusiasm of pupils and parents for the appeal remains unwavering, with everyone eager to contribute to this meaningful cause.

Team Hope, an Irish Christian development charity, supports children affected by poverty across Eastern Europe and Africa. Through their annual Shoebox Appeal, they deliver thousands of gift-filled boxes from Ireland, bringing joy and hope to children who might otherwise go without. On Monday morning, Team Hope representative Mick O’Connell from Listowel arrived to collect the donations—making two van trips due to the overwhelming response from the Scoil Eoin community. The school extended heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make this year’s appeal such a remarkable success.

Record-Breaking

Conference Under the Theme ‘Empowering

TEDxTralee hosted its fourth conference and first-ever TEDxWomen event last Saturday at Siamsa Tíre Theatre, celebrating the theme “Empowering Resilience.” The independently organised, TED-licensed event featured 22 local, national, and international speakers, alongside performances and special guests, making it the biggest TEDxTralee to date.

Curators Bryan Carr and James Finnegan expressed their delight at the record turnout and weekendlong activities. “We are now in

the top five percentile of TEDx Talks worldwide, with our previous talks watched over 4.5 million times globally,” they said. The event attracted delegates from across Ireland for a “TEDcation” weekend in Tralee, which included local walks, attractions, and social gatherings — a “Gathering” at McCaffrey’s and a “Scattering” at The Rose Hotel.

Saturday’s programme featured foyer activations, short films, and a vibrant mix of speakers sharing their life-changing stories and big ideas. From an initial pool of

154 submissions, speakers were carefully chosen through panel interviews for their inspiring and empowering messages.

Carr and Finnegan extended thanks to key partners including The Rose Hotel, Kerry County Council, Discover Kerry, Tralee Chamber Alliance, and Siamsa Tíre, as well as Network Ireland Kerry, Samhain Chiarraí, and Connecting for Life Kerry for their invaluable support. They also praised MC Elaine Kinsella, past speakers, and the dedicated volunteers who made the event possible.

All talks have now been submitted to TED for approval before being published online at tedxtralee. ie. Plans are already underway for TEDxTralee 2026, supported by a newly formed not-for-profit company, Ideas Worth Spreading
